This is how it is when one category of people is favored over another, and each of them has its own virtues; Allah mentions the good characteristics that they have in common lest anyone think that the one of lesser standing is being condemned. For this reason, Allah says here, (To each Allah has promised a fine reward). Al-Saadi: 195.
Question: After mentioning fighters, and those who stayed behind, Allah says, (To each Allah has promised a fine reward). What is inferred from that?
Consider how well this transition from one state to a higher one in this verse, as it states first of all that the mujahid and a non-mujahid are not equal, then it states clearly that the mujahid is superior by one rank to the one who stays behind, then it moves on to favoring the mujahid with forgiveness, mercy and high status. Al-Saadi: 195.
Question: The verse contains an attractive way of describing the reward of mujahideen. What is it?
This verse was revealed about a group of people from Makkah who had converted to Islam when the Messenger was in Makkah. When the Messenger (r) migrated, they stayed behind and were persecuted until they renounced their faith, and joined the polytheists against the Muslims in the battle of Badr and were killed as disbelievers. The Muslims said: "Those were believers but were forced to renounce their faith and fight against us." So, this verse was revealed. [Narrated by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Ibn Abbas]. Ibn Ashur: 5/174.
Question: When is a Muslim excused for weakness?
Meaning: Were you not able to emigrate and distance yourself from those who oppressed you? This verse is evidence that migrating from a land in which sins are committed is an obligation. Al-Qurtubi: 7/64.
Question: What should a Muslim do if he lives in a city full of sins and fears for himself?
Allah encourages the believers to migrate by mentioning the abundance and great reward in order to help them overcome the devil's whispers who may suggest that leaving the comfort of home would put them in the hardship of exile or death before reaching their destination. Al-Biqai: 2/299.
Question: What the whispers that satan stirs up to prevent the believer from emigrating?
Allah, The Most Generous, will give a full reward to whoever intended to do a good deed but could not achieve it. Al-Biqai: 2/304.
Question: This verse indicates Allah's generosity and mercy. Explain.
An immigrant in the cause of Allah will receive one of the two best things: Either he will humiliate the enemies of Allah by parting with them to a place of goodness and abundance, or death will overtake him and he will reach true happiness and eternal bliss. Al-Alusi: 5/128.
Question: An immigrant in the cause of Allah will receive one of the two best things. What are they?
