Meaning: Due to your lack of sincerity toward Allah in worshiping Him because your worship of Him is accompanied by polytheism and is not truly deemed as worship. Al-Saadi: 936.
Question: It is known that the disbelievers of Quraish used to worship Allah and would worship other deities, then for what purpose did this verse deny their worship to Allah?
Imam Abu Abdullah Al-Shafi'i and other scholars deduced from this verse that disbelief of all kinds is one religion, for all religions except Islam are equally null. Ibn Kathir: 4/565.
Question: "Disbelief is one religion." Explain this statement in light of this verse.
This Surah adopts a reformist approach by which no half-solutions are ever accepted because the deal that the polytheists offered the Prophet (ﷺ) which aimed to merge people's worship is a compromise; so that each side has a chance of being sided with the truth, but the response was decisive and rebuking, because if the Prophet were to accept their deal for even a moment, it will equalize the truth with falsehood, hold back the issue, and validate falsehood. Al-Shanqiti: 9/136.
Question: Are half-solutions acceptable in the basics of Islam?
This indicates that divine support for this religion would continue and increase when His Messenger (ﷺ) glorified and praised his Lord, and sought His forgiveness, for that is part of gratitude, as Allah says elsewhere, (If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more) [14:7]. Indeed, that came to pass during the time of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs and afterwards. Divine help for this Ummah continued and Islam attained success unmatched by any other religion until the Ummah's attitude changed, and they began to behave contrary to Allah's commands. Then Allah inflicted upon them division and disunity, and there happened what happened. Al-Saadi: 936.
Question: Explain the importance of glorifying Allah, expressing gratitude, and seeking forgiveness when it comes to helping the nation and religion of Islam.
It is known that virtuous matters end with pleas for forgiveness, as in the case of prayer, Hajj and other acts of worship. So, Allah's command to His Messenger (ﷺ) to praise Him and seek His forgiveness in this situation was a hint that his life was coming to an end, so let him prepare and get ready to meet his Lord, and end his life with the best deeds that he could do, (ﷺ). Al-Saadi: 936.
Question: How does this Surah indicate the Prophet's (ﷺ) life is nearing its end?
From this verse, it is known that merely relating to righteous people is not sufficient unless they are emulated, as Abu Lahab is the uncle of the Prophet (ﷺ). Al-Biqai: 22/331.
Question: Does one's status of kinship matter if he lacks worship? Explain in light of this verse.
Abu Lahab's wife supported his disbelief, denial, and obstinacy. Therefore, she will be helping to administer his punishment in the Hellfire, thus, Allah says, (the carrier of firewood ` Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber), which means that she will carry the firewood to throw onto her husband to burn him further. Ibn Kathir: 4/569.
Question: Explain the importance of choosing a righteous wife in light of this verse.
