This is general in meaning and includes all calamities. Everything that befalls people happens by the will and decree of Allah. What matters is whether the individual will do what is required of him or not. If he does what is required of him, then he will have a great reward in this world and the Hereafter. If he believes that it is from Allah, and he accepts it and submits to His decree, Allah will guide his heart, and he will be reassured and will not panic at times of calamity. Al-Saadi: 867.
Question: When you know that calamities are from Allah, what are the implications of that?
(And whoever believes in Allah, He will guide his heart), Ibn Abbas said: It means that Allah will guide his heart to have certain faith, where he knows that what has come to him could not have missed him, and what has missed him could not have come to him. Al-Tabari: 23/42.
Question: What is meant by (He will guide his heart)?
Describing them, here, as (believers) indicates the importance of belief for the reliance upon Allah, where the strength and weakness of reliance are commensurate with the level of faith in Allah. The greater the servant's belief in Allah, the stronger his reliance becomes, and the opposite is true. If his reliance is weak, that is a certain indication of his weak faith. Ibn Al-Qayim: 3/15.
Question: Allah addresses them as (the believers) after enjoining them to rely upon Him. Why?
Abu Bakr bin Al-Arabi said: "This clarifies the reason for enmity; where it is not an inherited enmity, rather, it is due to their actions. When a spouse or a son's actions are similar to that of an enemy, then, he becomes one, and there is no action more disgraceful than preventing a servant from disobeying Allah." Al-Qurtubi: 17/152.
Question: How can a spouse or a son become an enemy?
Ibn Masoud said: "None of you should say: O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the trial, as every one of you already has one, because Allah says, (Your wealth and your children are but a trial); but if any of you seeks refuge, let him seek refuge with Allah from misleading trials." Ibn Al-Qayim: 3/160.
Question: What supplication should the person say when facing trials?
Here, Allah commands His servants to fear Him, which means complying with His commands and heeding His prohibitions, according to what one is able to do. This verse indicates that every duty a person is unable to do because it is too difficult for him is waived in his case, but if he is able to do some of it and unable to do the rest, then he should do whatever he is capable of, and the rest will be waived for him. Al-Saadi: 86.
Question: What benefit will you gain by knowing that fearing Allah is required to the best of your ability?
The aim here is to emphasize the virtue of spending for charity that is enjoined. It is described as: Better for the giver, a reason for success, and a goodly loan from the servant to his Lord. This is sufficient encouragement and graciousness in request by making the giver as if he were handing out money to Allah, the Almighty. It manifests the meaning of doing good with Allah. Ibn Ashur: 28/290.
Question: In this verse, spending for charity is encouraged through many ways. What are they?
