Meaning: The disbelievers will try to contradict the truth with falsehood. Their attempts are similar to one's attempt to extinguish the sun with his mouth, which is impossible. Likewise, is the case of their attempt to extinguish the truth. Ibn Kathir: 4/361.
Question: Explain the analogy presented in this verse.
This statement (Will complete His light) is joined with the statement (they want), which indicates that they will never achieve their aim and that this religion will be complete and will prevail. Ibn Ashur: 28/190.
Question: What are the glad tidings contained in this verse (But Allah will complete His light)?
It is well known that Allah promised to make Islam prevail over all religions; a prevalence of its knowledge and clarification, and a prevalence by the sword and spike. Allah says, (It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religions). The scholars interpreted its prevalence by both, since the prevalence of guidance is through Knowledge and the prevalence of religion is through physical strength. Ibn Taimyah: 6/297.
Question: How will the religion of Islam prevail over all religions?
It is as if the souls had become stingy with their lives and survival, hence, He says, (That is best for you, if you only knew), which means that Jihad is much better for you than remaining in this life and safety. Ibn Al-Qayim: 3/153.
Question: The verse concludes with (if you only knew). Why?
It is well known that perfect faith is to believe with certainty in what Allah has commanded us to believe in, which requires physical actions, one of the most sublime of which is Jihad in Allah's cause. Hence Allah says: (And strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives). Al-Saadi: 860.
Question: What is the link between faith and Jihad?
The dwellings are mentioned here because they leave their homes behind when they go for Jihad, hence, Allah promised them eternal and pleasant homes for their brief departure from their own. Ibn Ashur: 28/195.
Question: The dwellings are singled out for mention. Why?
Allah, the Exalted, orders His faithful servants to be supporters of His cause in all situations, through their words, actions, selves, and wealth. Ibn Kathir: 4/361.
Question: Is the support for Allah's cause limited to a particular time or situation?
