(Sent) is a verb in the past tense form to urge one to do good deeds for the Hereafter and not delay, for he has nothing except what he had done in the past. He can't control the future and does not know what will transpire. (No soul knows what it will do tomorrow) [31:34]. Al-Shanqiti: 8/54.
Question: The verb “sent” is in past tense. Why?
This verse offers a guideline with regard to doing self-reckoning and reminds the believer that he should continue to check on himself and if he sees any lapse, he must take action by giving it up, repenting sincerely and turning away from any means that may lead to it. If he sees himself falling short with regard to any divine command, he should strive hard and seek the help of his Lord in completing, perfecting, and doing it properly. He should compare the blessings that Allah has bestowed generously upon him with his shortcomings, for that will undoubtedly make him feel humbled. Al-Saadi: 853.
Question: Explain self-reckoning in light of this verse.
When Allah makes one forget himself, it means making him forget his own self high gains, the means to one's satisfaction, prosperity, reform and everything that leads to one's excellence. He makes him forget all of that to a point where they never cross his mind or become desirable to him. Moreover, Allah makes him forget his own flaws and shortcomings so that he becomes heedless of eliminating them. Ibn Al-Qayim: 3/147.
Question: How does one forget himself?
(He made them forget themselves), as if the listener asked: What was the result of making them forget themselves? My answer is: Because of it, they have reached the farthest level of defiant disobedience with their evil deeds where one can say that nothing else can match their defiant disobedience. Ibn Ashur: 28/114.
Question: What was the result of making them forget themselves?
Allah urges Mankind to reflect on the admonitions of the Quran and makes clear that it is inexcusable to omit reflecting on it. If the mountains were mindful and were spoken to with this Quran, they would have followed its admonitions, and you would have seen these solid mountains humbled and splitting (cracking) in awe of Allah. Al-Qurtubi: 20/388.
Question: Is there an excuse for anyone to omit reflecting on the Quran after reciting this verse?
Since this attribute (Knower of the unseen and the seen) is unique to Allah that no one else shares with Him, it is stated as evidence of the Oneness of Allah in other verses of the Quran. Al-Shanqiti: 8/68.
Question: What is the evidence of the Oneness of Allah?
Allah, the Almighty, is the Sovereign (the King) but is unlike other kings who are known to be flawed as one may think. So, His name (the Most Holy) is exalting Him above all flaws and imperfections, His name (the Believer/Grantor of security) is exalting His unseen actions above treachery and deception, and His name (the Most Perfect/Source of peace) is exalting His visible actions above tyranny and injustice. Ibn Ashur: 28/121.
Question: The Holy Names: (the Most Holy), (the Most Perfect) and (the Believer) are stated after Allah's name (the Sovereign). Why?
