It is said that these are the Companions' followers and their followers who came afterward until the Day of Resurrection. Based on that, Imam Malik said: Whoever reviles the Companions, will have no share in the booties with or without war, because Allah describes those who come after the Companions as: (They say, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brethren who preceded us in faith"), hence, whoever says the opposite of that, will be out of those described by Allah. Ibn Juzay: 2/430.
Question: How did Imam Malik deduce from this verse that whoever reviles the Companions, has no share in the booties?
This is one of the virtues of faith, that the believers seek to benefit from one another and pray for one another because of their shared faith which creates the bond of brotherhood between the believers. One of the branches of that brotherhood is that they pray for one another and love one another. Al-Saadi: 852.
Question: This verse indicates one of the virtues of faith. What is it?
The true understanding is to fear the Creator, put one's hope in Him and love Him, and give precedence to this over all other matters, which should be secondary to it. Al-Saadi: 852.
Question: What is the sign of the servant's understanding?
The fear is described as: In their hearts, which indicates that it was very hidden. Meaning: They pretended to ready themselves for fighting the Muslims, and bluffed their courage to frighten them, but, in fact, they were not up to it, and Allah disclosed their true nature to His Messenger (ﷺ). Ibn Ashur: 28/103.
Question: The fear is described as: In their hearts, why? How does it benefit the Muslims?
Al-Qushayri said: Meeting people with discordant hearts is the basis of degeneration, forsaking, and enticing the enemy to be more daring against them. In contrast, harmony of the hearts, unified resolve, and common purpose bring about success and happiness. Al-Biqai: 19/452.
Question: What is the risk of discordant hearts?
They are lacking faith that keeps them together, for they know that they follow falsehood and desires, which keep them divided. Unlike reason, which is the basis for unity, following whims is the basis for division. Al-Biqai: 19/453.
Question: The Jews are described as: A people who do not reason. Why?
This verse contains a lesson to Muslims to beware of disputes and hostilities among themselves, and to realize that the strength of the Muslim Ummah against its enemies stems from its unity. Ibn Ashur: 28/106.
Question: The verse indicates the importance of unity against enemies. Explain.
