(To Him belong the sailing ships raised up in the sea like mountains), Allah mentions His blessing of creating the means for surviving disasters and establishing livelihood for people by making available for them sailing ships for their travel in safety. Describing the ships as mountains indicates the expansion of this blessing. Then Allah reminds the people that all of that will not prevent His decree that they are all destined to perish. Ibn Ashur: 27/252.
Question: What is the link between this verse and the ones before it?
It was narrated from Abu Darda' that the Prophet said: "His affairs include forgiving sins, relieving distress, raising some people and bringing others low." Al-Qurtubi: 20/134.
Question: What is meant by (Every day He is engaged in some matters)?
Attending to them does not indicate that Allah was busy with something before that because He can never be distracted by anything, but, here, Allah is threatening men and jinn with reckoning. Al-Baghawi: 4/492.
Question: What is meant by (We will attend to you, O prominent beings)?
Jinn and men are called (prominent beings) due to their importance among the inhabitants of the earth. Moreover, it is said that they are called as such because of their burden on earth in life and death, as described by this verse: (And the earth throws out its burdens)[99:2]. Ja'far Al-Sadiq said: They are called as such because they are burdened by sins. Al-Shawkani: 5/137.
Question: The jinn and men are called (prominent beings). Why?
Meaning: He will send against you pure flames of fire (and smoke). What is meant is that these two frightening things will be sent against you, O jinn and humans, and they will encompass you, then you will not be able to protect yourselves and no one will protect you against Allah. Because His alarming His servants is a blessing to them and a motive that should push them toward the most sublime aims, Allah reminds them of His blessings, saying: (Then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?). Al-Saadi: 831.
Question: The mention of the Fire is a blessing for the believers. How?
The heaven is likened to oil on the Day of Resurrection because it will melt due to the horrors of that Day. Moreover, it is said that the heaven will shine similar to the shine of oil. It is, also, said that oil means reddish skin. Ibn Juzay: 2/395.
Question: The heaven is, eloquently, likened to oil. Explain.
This verse describes one scene on the Day of Resurrection while this verse: (By your Lord, We will surely question them all)[15:92] describes another scene. Moreover, it is said that they will not be asked for information about their sins because Allah, the Almighty, has kept complete records of His servants’ deeds, rather, they will be censured and rebuked. Al-Shawkani: 5/138.
Question: How do we reconcile this verse and: (By your Lord, We will surely question them all)?
