This indicates that the right of the mother is more certain than that of the father, because she bore him with difficulty, gave birth to him with difficulty, and nursed him throughout this time period with difficulty while the father did not share any of that with her. Al-Shawkani: 5/18.
Question: This verse affirms the rights of parents but with more emphasis on the mother’s. Explain.
This verse has guidance for anyone who reaches forty years of age to renew his repentance and turn to Allah with a strong resolution. Ibn Kathir: 4/160.
Question: This verse has guidance for anyone who reaches forty years of age. What is it?
The time period of maturity is singled out for mention because it is normally the busiest time for a person who makes a living for himself, wife and children. It is also a busy time for a woman with a husband, household, and children. During this time period, both, the man and woman are more likely to be distracted from caring for their parents with kindness, so, they are alerted to keep up their kindness to their parents. Ibn Ashur: 26/32.
Question: The time period of maturity is singled out for mention. Why?
A blessing to the parents is a blessing to their children and descendants because they will inevitably get some of them and some of their effects, especially the blessing of religious commitment because the righteousness of the parents, that is based on knowledge and deeds, is one of the main reasons for the righteousness of their children. Al-Saadi: 781.
Question: Why should one be grateful to Allah for the blessings He bestowed upon his parents?
The believer does not exhaust his pleasure during his worldly life but leaves some of them for the Hereafter. However, the disbeliever, who does not believe in the Hereafter, is keen to take all of his pleasures during his worldly life. Ibn Al-Qayim: 2/450.
Question: What is the difference in attitude toward worldly life's pleasures between the believer and the disbeliever?
This verse pertains to the disbelievers because it says so, (and the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire), however, it is an admonishment to the pious among the believers. When Omar saw Jabir bin Abdullah buying meat, he said: Do you not fear that this verse may apply to you? Ibn Juzay: 2/335.
Question: Does the Muslim become admonished by verses aimed at the disbelievers? How?
Their arrogance refers to their disdain for faith and their defiant disobedience refers to their physical sins. Here, the misdeeds of the heart precede that of the physical faculties because physical deeds stem from the intention of the heart. Al-Alusi: 25/250.
Question: In this verse, misdeeds of the heart precede that of physical faculties. Explain. Which ones are riskier?
