Allah says, (And revealed the Torah and the Gospel) because each one was sent down as one whole, while He says about the Quran (He has sent down to you the Book) because it was sent down in portions. Al-Baghawi: 1/320.
Question: Allah Says about the Torah and Gospel (revealed), and says about the Quran (sent down). Why?
(Confirming what came before it) of the previous books. So, it is a judge over them; what it confirms is to be accepted and what it refutes is to be rejected. The Quran is consistent with them in all the requirements agreed upon by the messengers. These books testify that the Quran is truly from Allah. If the People of the Book do not believe in the Quran, then they cannot truly believe in their books; their disbelief in the Quran invalidates their belief in their books. Al-Saadi: 121.
Question: This verse indicates that the Quran is a criterion over other revealed books. How?
Allah sent down verses that are unspecific to distinguish the scholars who are keen to study and reflect on their meanings to gain the knowledge in order to infer the true aims behind Sharia's laws and teachings. By doing that, they may attain the high ranks by exhausting their minds and extracting the sublime purposes and appropriate meanings. Al-Alusi: 3/83.
Question: What is the wisdom behind sending down verses that are unspecific?
(Those with deviant hearts), those who are misguided and deviate from truth to falsehood. (Follow that which is unspecific), so that they can distort its meanings to suit their corrupt purposes because its wording may be interpreted in accordance with what they intend. As for the definite verses, they cannot be distorted because they are clear, thus, constitute unequivocal proof against misguided people. For this reason, Allah the Most High says, (Seeking discord), to mislead their followers by pretending to prove their innovations by relying on the Quran, while, in fact, it is an argument against them, not for them. Ibn Kathir: 1/336.
Question: What is the attitude of innovators toward the unspecific verses of the Quran?
Allah makes it clear that no one will be misguided by the unspecific verses except those with a crooked nature who are not firmly rooted in religion and whose knowledge is not enlightened in science. Al-Biqai: 2/22.
Question: Who is likely to be misguided by the unspecific verses of the Quran?
This is a praise to those who are well grounded in the quality of their minds and good insight, because their minds have been stripped of what clouds them of reliance on false desires, and they have prepared themselves to be guided to the landmarks of truth and to ascend to the heights of rightness. Al-Alusi: 3/83.
Question: What is the significance of the Almighty's saying: (None will take heed except people of understanding)?
Allah's general mercy encompasses all of His creations, the good and bad, the believers and disbelievers. Then He has mercy given to the believers in particular, which is the mercy of faith. Then, He has mercy given to the righteous only, which is the mercy of obedience to Allah, the Most High. Moreover, He has mercy given to His allies only, by which they attained higher rank with Him. Furthermore, He has mercy given to His Prophets only, by which they attained Prophethood. Those who are well-grounded in knowledge supplicate Allah by saying: (and grant us Your Mercy). Ibn Taimyah: 2/34.
Question: List some types of Allah's Mercy toward His creation?
