They will despair of being saved, hence, they succumb to the torment and punishment. Al-Tabari: 21/643.
Question: What is meant by: (They, therein, are in despair)?
Meaning: They will grieve due to the despair. In the Arabic text, the word used for (they, therein, are in despair) is "Mublisoon." Al-Raghib said: Iblas is the grief due to extreme despair, and the name "Iblees" is derived from it. The "Mublis" often remains quiet and forgets what concerns him, hence, when someone becomes quiet and has nothing to say, he is described as "Ablasa." Therefore, here "Iblas" is interpreted as silence and the loss of argument. Al-Alusi: 25/141.
Question: What is the meaning of "Mublisoon"?
When they ask to be allowed to die, Malik will answer them: (Indeed, you will remain), which means that you will have no way out from it and no refuge. Then, the reason why they are doomed will be given, which is their stubborn resistance to the truth. Allah says: (We surely brought you the truth, but most of you were averse to the truth). Ibn Kathir: 4/137.
Question: The verse (We surely brought you the truth) comes after (Indeed, you will remain). Why?
Meaning: In worldly life, We have brought you the truth, which is the Oneness of Allah, and the requirements of faith by sending the Messengers and revealing the Scriptures, but most of you were averse to the truth, any truth, repelled from it and rejecting it. Al-Alusi: 25/142.
Question: What is meant by (the truth) in this verse?
(Then I would be the first of [his] worshipers) namely that son, because he would be a part of his father, and I am the first of humankind to submit to that which is beloved to Allah. But I am the first to reject this notion and the most emphatic in denying it. Thus, it is known that it is false. This is a strong argument, for those who know how the Messengers really are. Al-Saadi: 770.
Question: This verse indicates that the Messengers have always pursued perfection and kept away from evil. Explain this useful lesson.
Allah mentions the heavens and earth to indicate that He encompasses the worlds of arrangement and creation, since the polytheists associated partners to Him on earth, which were their idols, and attributed daughters to Him in heavens, which were the angels. Ibn Ashur: 25/267.
Question: Allah mentions that He is the Lord of the heavens and earth. Why?
He was not enjoined to greet them, rather, he was enjoined to leave them, which means if you reject my Message, then I will leave you in peace. Al-Alusi: 25/151.
Question: We are enjoined to be lenient and wise against the rejection of those whom we preach. Explain in light of this verse.
