It is the Quran; it is called an inspiration because it has a spirit that revives people from the death of ignorance. Malik bin Dinar used to say: O people of the Quran, what did the Quran grow in your hearts?! As the Quran is the spring of the hearts just like the rain is the spring of the earth. Al-Qurtubi: 18/509.
Question: Calling the Quran an inspiration indicates a deeper meaning. Explain.
Allah describes His Messenger (ﷺ) before the revelation, saying: (You did not know what is the Book), which means the essence of it, for he (ﷺ) was illiterate who could not read nor write out of a document; and that highlighted the miracle of the Quran, and made a strong proof of truthfulness of his Prophethood. Al-Shawkani: 4/545.
Question: This verse indicates the truthfulness of the Prophet (ﷺ)?
Allah likens the Book to the light in guidance, as faith, guidance and knowledge resemble the light, while misguidance, ignorance, and disbelief resemble darkness. Allah says, (He brings them out from darknesses into the light) [2:257]. If someone walks on a dark road, he will lose his way, but if there is a light, then he will find his way. So, the light is a means for guidance when no obstacle exists to prevent one from being guided, or else, the light will be of no benefit, as Allah says, (by which We guide whom We will of Our servants). Ibn Ashur: 25/154.
Question: Allah likens the Book to the light, Why? Who can benefit from the light of the Noble Book?
This explains the high status of the Quran among the highest assembly (the angels), so that the people of the earth respect, venerate, and obey it. Ibn Kathir: 4/124.
Question: Allah explains the high status of the Quran among the highest assembly. Why?
Qatadah said: By Allah, had this Quran been lifted when it was first rejected by the former people of this Ummah, they all would have perished, but Allah, by His mercy, repeated it to them again and again. Al-Qurtubi: 19/7.
Question: Had this Quran been lifted when it was first rejected by the people, what would have happened to us?
Meaning: Even if the state in which you are entails leaving and abandoning you so you may die as disbelievers and remain in eternal punishment, but because of Our vast mercy, We will not do that, rather, We will show you the truth through sending the trusted Messenger and revealing the clear Book. Al-Alusi: 25/90.
Question: How does this verse show the vast mercy and bounty of Allah?
This is a consolation to His Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Al-Qurtubi: 19/9.
Question: What is the aim for mentioning the ridicule of previous Prophets by their people?
