Alhasan bin Abi Alhasan said: The chains will not be put around the necks of inhabitants of the fire because they may escape the Lord, but to hold them down when the flames push them afloat. Ibn Atiyah: 4/569.
Question: Why will chains be put around the necks of the inhabitants of the Fire?

The meaning here is close to saying: I have ignited the oven. They will enter the fire like wood when put inside the oven. Mujahid said: They will be the fuel for the Fire. Ibn Juzay: 2/285.
Question: How can we infer from this verse the risk of disputing concerning the signs of Allah without knowledge?

(Then it will be said to them, "Where are those whom you used to associate as partners) by worshiping your gods and idols, besides Allah, so they may help save you from the affliction and punishment in which you are, for the worshiped must help those who worshiped him. This will be said to rebuke and scold them for what they had done in the worldly life. Al-Tabari: 21/416.
Question: What is the purpose of asking the polytheists about their gods as they are facing punishment?

The question is presented here to highlight their wrong and scandal at the gathering on the Last Day because they used to say that they worship the idols to intercede for them against Allah's wrath, but when punishment is decreed upon them and they do not find intercessors, they will be reminded of what they used to claim, and will be said, (Where are those whom you used to associate as partners). Ibn Ashur: 24/204.
Question: What is the purpose of the question in this verse?

As a rebuke to them, it will be said: This punishment is for what you used to rejoice in sins. Meaning: The torment in which you are now is because of your displayed rejoice in sins and the abundance of wealth, followers, and health. Al-Qurtubi: 18/383.
Question: What is the reason for their punishment? What lesson do we learn from that?

Meaning: You used to exult in the falsehood that you were following. This is a blameworthy kind of joy that is deserving of punishment, unlike the praiseworthy kind of joy of which Allah says, (Say, "In the grace of Allah and in His mercy - in that let them rejoice") [10:58]. That refers to rejoicing in beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. Al-Saadi: 743.
Question: What is the good exultation? What is the blameworthy exultation?

Meaning: If We show you some of the punishment that We threaten them with, it will be comforting to your eyes, and if We cause you to die before that, then, they will return to Us, and We will surely exact harsh retribution upon them. Ibn Juzay: 2/286.
