وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدۡعُونِيٓ أَسۡتَجِبۡ لَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدۡخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ٦٠
(Those who are too proud to worship Me), they are too arrogant to turn to Me in hope, as the Prophet (ﷺ) Said: "Allah is angry with the person who does not ask Him." As for this Hadith: "Verily, supplication is worship," it means that supplication and turning to Allah in hope is the worship, as supplication is a sign of showing the person's need and humbleness to Allah. Ibn Juzay: 2/284.
Question: Given this verse, how do you infer that supplication is worship?
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدۡعُونِيٓ أَسۡتَجِبۡ لَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدۡخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ٦٠
Sufyan Al-Thawri used to say: "O You Who love most those who ask of You, and O You Who hate most those who do not ask of You, and there is no one like that apart from You, O Lord." Similarly; the poet said: Allah hates not to be asked, and the son of Adam hates to be asked. Ibn Kathir: 4/87.
Question: Compare between asking Allah and asking people.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدۡخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ٦٠
They will be humiliated and despised, suffering a combination of punishment and humiliation, as a requital for their arrogance. Al-Saadi: 741.
Question: In light of this verse, discuss the principle of the requital befits the action.
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ قَرَارٗا وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بِنَآءٗ
Since the principle aim of this verse is for people to show gratitude to Allah -as inferred by the phrase (for you)- earth is mentioned before the sky because its benefits are perceivable; the sky is mentioned afterward as opposite things are mentioned together. Ibn Ashur: 24/189.
Question: The earth is mentioned before the sky in this verse. Why?
وَصَوَّرَكُمۡ فَأَحۡسَنَ صُوَرَكُمۡ
Muqatil said: He created you in the best creation. Ibn Abbas said: The son of Adam was created upright and straight, using his hands for picking things and eating while other creatures pick their food with their mouths. Al-Baghawi: 4/52.
Question: The creation of son of Adam has an advantage over other creatures. Explain.
وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِۚ
Meaning: Here, (good things) means savory things because it is mentioned in the context of bestowing. When (good things) is mentioned in the context of explaining what is lawful and unlawful, then it means lawful things. Ibn Juzay: 2/284.
Question: The phrase (good things) in the Quran has two different meanings. Mention them with explanation.
وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أُسۡلِمَ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٦
Meaning: I submit with humility and subservience to the Lord of the worlds. Al-Qurtubi: 18/378.
Question: How does one submit to Allah, the Almighty?
