Their thoughts are stated in the natural sequence as they come to their minds. Starting with regret for what they had brought about on themselves, then, apology and disavowal of their actions hoping it will save them, then, wishing to go back to worldly life to do good, as Allah says, (he says, "My Lord, send me back ` so that I may do righteous deeds in what I left behind"). Thus, this order of describing the events is very precise. Ibn Ashur: 24/47.
Question: The verses describe the soul’s sequence of thoughts in an orderly manner. Explain
Describing them as (arrogant) indicates that punishing them by blackening their faces is appropriate for their arrogance, because when an arrogant person has a bad face, his arrogance will diminish, for arrogance will abate commensurate with the person's awareness of people's knowledge of his shortcomings. Ibn Ashur: 24/5.
Question: What is the wisdom behind punishing the arrogant by blackening their faces?
(And Allah will save those who feared Him) from Hellfire because they are not arrogant. This indicates that fearing Allah contradicts arrogance, as fearing Allah is the ultimate quality in Sharia, which entails avoiding all evils and adhering to Allah's command outwardly and inwardly; and arrogance is an inward heart sickness. Ibn Ashur: 24/52.
Question: What is the use of mentioning those who fear Allah after mentioning the arrogant?
This and similar phrases, which appear frequently in the Quran, indicate that all things - apart from Allah and His names and attributes - are created. This is a refutation of all those who say that some created things exist since eternity, such as the philosophers who say that the earth and the heavens exist since eternity, or those who say that souls exist since eternity, and other views that are based on falsehood and implicitly deny the Creator. Al-Saadi: 728.
Question: How do you respond to those who say that some created things exist since eternity? What are the implications of such claim?
Meaning: This stems from your ignorance, otherwise if you knew that Allah, Who is perfect in all aspects, the Bestower of all blessings, is the only One Who is deserving of worship, and not those who are lacking in all aspects and cannot bring benefit or cause harm, you would not order me to do that. Al-Saadi: 729.
Question: The polytheists are described as the (ignorant ones). Why?
(And be among those who are grateful) for His guidance. Just as Allah is to be thanked for worldly blessings, such as physical good health and well-being, granting provision, and so on, He is also to be thanked and praised for spiritual blessings, such as enabling one to be sincere and to fear Him. In fact, it is spiritual blessings that are the real blessings. Al-Saadi: 729.
Question: The verse ends with (and be among those who are grateful). Why?
Pondering and realizing that they come from Allah and giving thanks to Him for them will protect the person from self-admiration that affects many people who strive hard, because of their ignorance. Otherwise, if a person were to understand the reality of things, he would not develop self-admiration because of the blessing which requires him to give more thanks to Allah. Al-Saadi: 729.
Question: This verse guides to ridding of the delusion and self-admiration that may happen to those who do righteous deeds. Explain.
