The instruction to conduct a discussion with the people of the Scripture in the best manner is because they believe in Allah, and are not polytheists; therefore, they are less likely to be contentious and more likely to accept the arguments. Moreover, the teachings of their religion and Scripture prepared them for discussion and reasoning, therefore, arguing with them should be limited to clearly stating the proofs without displaying harshness, lest they be turned off. Ibn Ashur: 21/6.
Question: We are instructed to argue with the people of the Scripture in the best manner. Why?
Meaning: Do not frame your argument with them in a way that it leads to you criticizing any of the divinely-revealed Books or any of the Messengers, as the ignorant do when arguing and criticizing everything that they have, whether it is right or wrong. This is unfair and is drifting away from the proper manners and etiquette of debate. What one should do is reject what one's opponent has of falsehood and accept what he has of truth, and not reject the truth just because he said it, even if he is a disbeliever. Al-Saadi: 632.
Question: Arguing with disbelievers is based on fairness and prudence. Explain in light of this verse.
The verb (believe) is in the present tense to indicate its occurrence in the future, or the renewal of the belief by this group; that is, the number of those who believe increases every day. Ibn Ashur: 21/9.
Question: In this verse, the verb (believe) is in the present tense. Why?
Those who persistently deny the truth and stubbornly reject it. This states that only the disbelievers reject Allah’s revelation since rejection cannot come from ones whose aim is to follow the truth. Otherwise, anyone with good intentions will inevitably believe in it, for what it contains of clear proofs for anyone who has sound reason or who pays heed.Al-Saadi: 633.
Question: Do those who have good intentions deny the Quran?
Alhasan said: "This [Muslims] Ummah were given memorization, while those before them could recite only by looking in their Books, and once they closed them, they did not memorize anything except the Prophets." Al-Qurtubi: 16/376.
Question: Memorizing the Quran is a great virtue. Explain.
Meaning: How do they request a sign while the Holy Quran is the greatest of all signs, and the clearest proof of Prophethood. Should they not be content to have the Quran instead of requesting other signs. Ibn Juzay: 2/161.
Question: The revelation of the Quran is a response to those who claim that the Prophet (ﷺ) came up with it. How?
Meaning: Allah knows what I am telling you about Him, and that He has sent me. If I were telling lies about Him, He would have executed His vengeance upon me. Ibn Kathir: 3/404.
Question: Allah testifies to the truthfulness of Muhammad's (ﷺ) Prophethood. How?
