This was because proof had clearly been established against them, so they resorted to using their power and strength. Ibn Kathir: 3/395.
Question: What does it indicate when wrongdoers resort to using power?
There are signs, not one, in saving Abraham (u) from the fire, since it was a sign for all those who witnessed it, a sign of Allah's capability, a sign of His Messenger's honor, a sign of fulfilling Allah's promise, a sign of His enemy's abasement, and a manifestation of Allah's power over all created beings, big and small. Ibn Ashur: 20/235.
Question: There are signs, not one, in saving Abraham (u) from the fire. Explain.
This includes anyone who joins his disobedient friends in evildoing, in order to seek their approval and be considered a nice and easy-going friend, or to avoid being described as an unpleasant and disagreeable person. Unfortunately, this attitude has become very common among people these days aiming to be viewed as loyal and sincere friends, while turning away from what pleases Allah, the King, the Judge. Al-Biqai: 14/424.
Question: There are limits to pleasing friends and companions. Explain in view of this verse.
Qatadah said: "On the Day of Resurrection, close friends will become enemies to one another, except the righteous." Al-Tabari: 20/25.
Question: Explain the benefit of a righteous friendship and the consequence of an evil one.
The idols will disown their worshipers, the leaders will disown their followers, and the followers will curse their leaders. Al-Baghawi: 3/467.
Question: What will be the consequences, on the Day of Resurrection, of following others in disobeying Allah?
Allah does not mention that He destroyed them with any punishment; rather He states that Abraham left them and migrated elsewhere. If Allah had eradicated them all through punishment, He would have mentioned that as He mentioned the destruction of other disbelieving nations. Perhaps the reason why they were not destroyed is that Abraham, who was one of the most compassionate, virtuous, forbearing, and noble of all people, did not pray against his people as others did. What may indicate that is the fact that he disputed and argued with the angels concerning the destruction of Lot's people, and tried to defend them, although they were not his people. And Allah knows best what really happened. Al-Saadi: 629-630.
Question: Among the traits of the allies of Allah is that they are most compassionate toward others. Explain in light of Abraham’s (u) story.
People are oblivious to many criminal acts because they are not accustomed to them until someone commits them and they become known, alerting people's minds to them, thus, their desires become attached to them. Ibn Ashur: 20/241.
Question: Explain the risk of setting a bad example in committing sins.
