وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَنُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنۡهُمۡ سَئِّاتِهِمۡ وَلَنَجۡزِيَنَّهُمۡ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٧
Meaning: Their reward will be based on the best of their deeds, which is obedience. It is also said: We will give them more and much better than they did. Al-Baghawi: 3/463.
Question: Allah will reward the believers according to the best of what they used to do. How?
When the believer is commanded to disobey his parents if they enjoined him to associate partners with Allah, this would lead to estrangement between him and his parents, therefore, Allah made the pleasure of being among the righteous as a reward for that estrangement. Ibn Ashur: 20/215.
Question: Allah will greatly reward those who put his obedience before that of others. Explain.
وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ فَإِذَآ أُوذِيَ فِي ٱللَّهِ جَعَلَ فِتۡنَةَ ٱلنَّاسِ كَعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِۖ
Meaning: He considers the torture by the people as if it were the punishment of Allah in the Hereafter, which means that he becomes desperate and loses his patience against the torture by the people, thus, he will obey the people just like someone who obeys Allah out of fear of His punishment. Al-Baghawi: 3/464.
Question: The hypocrite makes the persecution by the people as if it were Allah’s punishment. How?
وَلَيَحۡمِلُنَّ أَثۡقَالَهُمۡ وَأَثۡقَالٗا مَّعَ أَثۡقَالِهِمۡۖ
Here, Allah makes clear that those who call others to disbelief and misguidance will, on the Day of Resurrection, bear their own sins and the sins of others, because of the people they misguided. Yet that will not detract from the burden of those other people in the slightest. Ibn Kathir: 6/226.
Question: Is the sin of one who calls others to evil the same as theirs? Explain in view of the verse.
وَلَيَحۡمِلُنَّ أَثۡقَالَهُمۡ وَأَثۡقَالٗا مَّعَ أَثۡقَالِهِمۡۖ
For each sin committed by the follower, both the follower and the one whom he followed will have a share of it, the follower because he himself did it and the one whom he followed because he was the cause of his doing it and he called him to do it. By the same token, if the follower does a good deed, he will have the reward for doing it himself, and the one who called him to it will have a reward for being the cause of it. Al-Saadi: 627.
Question: This verse implicitly urges the believers to call others to Allah. Explain.
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِيهِمۡ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمۡسِينَ عَامٗا فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلطُّوفَانُ وَهُمۡ ظَٰلِمُونَ ١٤
In the Arabic text, two different words for the word (year) are used in this verse: Sanah and A'am. So, the original verse reads: (for a thousand sanah, less fifty a'am). The word "Sanah" is normally used to describe a period of hardship and drought, which is unlike "A'am." The choice of the word "Sanah" is suitable to reflect the hardship that Noah (u) suffered from his people while preaching them. Al-Alusi: 10/348.
Question: In the original Arabic text, the word "Sanah" is used for (year). Why?
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِيهِمۡ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمۡسِينَ عَامٗا فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلطُّوفَانُ وَهُمۡ ظَٰلِمُونَ ١٤
So, O Muhammad, do not feel sorry because of those among your people who disbelieve in you, and do not grieve over them, for Allah guides whomsoever He wills and leaves astray whomsoever He wills. The matter rests with Him and all things will return to Him. Ibn Kathir: 3/393.
Question: Can the human mind attain guidance on its own? How can guidance be attained?
