Meaning: Did he not know the benefit of knowledge? Was he not aware of how Allah punished those who were much more powerful than him, in a physical and moral sense, and had more wealth or people around them and at their service, lest he become deluded like they did? Al-Alusi: 10/326.
Question: What is Allah's way of dealing with those who are deluded by their power or wealth?
(Those who had been given knowledge said), they knew the reality of this life and the Hereafter. They did not describe the reward as: "reward of the Hereafter" to indicate that the true knowledge about this worldly life and the Hereafter would necessitate turning away from the former and seeking the latter. Hence, the yearning of those who wished was due to their lack of proper knowledge about this worldly life and the Hereafter. Al-Alusi: 10/327.
Question: Whoever, knowingly, turns away from this worldly life and seeks the Hereafter, will be more steadfast than others during trials. Explain in light of this verse.
Those (who had been given knowledge) did not wish ill for those who desired the worldly life, because lenient speech was more suitable for admonishment, rather, they were astounded at their attachment to the adornments of worldly life, their fascination with Korah's status while knowing his ungodly behavior, and their disregard of Allah's reward that they could attain through adhering to their religion and doing good deeds. Ibn Ashur: 20/184.
Question: Those who had been given knowledge said: (Woe to you!). What did they mean?
(Except the patient), those who refrained patiently from seeking the adornments of worldly life, and preferred Allah's reward for righteous deeds over worldly desires and pleasures, hence, they hastened to the obedience of Allah and disdained worldly life. Al-Tabari: 19/629.
Question: Who is given steadfastness during times of trials?
(And none are granted it), none would be willing to accept and abide by the words of those who had been given knowledge (except the patient), who endure patiently with their Lord’s decrees in times of prosperity and adversity, and bring themselves to obeying Allah. Patience has become a trait for them, and they are referred to in plural to indicate collaboration since religious acts are better performed in congregation. Al-Biqai: 14/358.
Question: Patience is a great trait which requires collaboration. How is this meaning inferred form the verse?
As a requital that matched his deed, for he had put himself above the servants of Allah, therefore, Allah brought him to the lowest of the low, him and the things by which he had been deluded, namely his house, furnishings and other possessions. Al-Saadi: 624.
Question: Why was Korah punished in this manner?
In Surat Al-Qasas, Allah begins by mentioning Pharaoh's exaltedness through governance and authority, and at the end of the Surah, He mentions Korah's corruption through great wealth, then He indicates the consequence of Pharaoh's authority, and Korah’s wealth, saying: (That is the abode of the Hereafter We will assign to those who neither seek exaltedness nor corruption on earth), similar to the situation of Pharaoh and Korah. Ibn Taimyah: 5/90.
Question: The Surah ends with mentioning two traits of the people of Paradise who neither seek exaltedness nor corruption on earth. Why?
