This grave trial was harder for Joseph than the trial he went through at the hands of his brothers, and the patience with which he bore it brought a greater reward because it was patience based on a choice even though there were many reasons to commit the sin, but he gave precedence to the love of Allah over those reasons. As for the trial at the hands of his brothers, his patience, in that case, was the patience of one who had no other choice, as in the case of sickness and hardship that may befall a person with no choice on his part, and he has no option but to bear it patiently, willingly or unwillingly. Al-Saadi: 396.
Question: Which trial is harder and more rewarding for Joseph (u): the trial with his brothers, or the one with his master's wife? Why?
(The refuge of Allah), I seek refuge with Allah, and I hold firmly to Him from what you invited me to. Al-Baghawi: 2/449.
Question: Seeking refuge with Allah has a great impact in avoiding a sin. Explain.
To sum up, he mentioned reasons why he should not do this evil act, namely fear of Allah and observing the rights of his master who had shown him kindness, as well as protecting himself from wrongdoing, as those who do wrong never prosper. Moreover, Allah had blessed him with the proof of the faith that was in his heart, which dictated that he should comply with Allah's commands and avoid what He prohibited. All of that was because Allah had averted evil and shameful acts from him. Al-Saadi: 396.
Question: What are the reasons that helped Joseph (u) to avoid committing the sin?
Allah says, (and she certainly advanced towards him, and he would have inclined towards her, had he not seen a sign from his Lord), it is the proof of the faith that was in his heart, by which Allah had kept evil away from him, and rewarded him for a full good deed. Ibn Taimyah: 4/34.
Question: What was the sign that Joseph (u) saw?
This proves that sincerity prevents satan's control over a person, as Allah said, (This is how We kept evil and shameful acts away from him. Indeed, he was one of Our chosen servants). Ibn Taimyah: 4/36.
Question: How do you infer from this verse that sincerity prevents satan's control over a person?
If a person sees a place in which there is temptation and the means that lead to sin, he should get as far away as possible, so that he will be safe from sin. When the woman in whose house Joseph (u) was living wanted to seduce him, he tried to flee from her and ran to the door in order to save himself from her evil. Al-Saadi: 409.
Question: What lesson is learned from the fleeing of Joseph (u) from the place of sin?
This also warns against the type of love that may cause harm. The master's wife did what she did because of being alone with Joseph, which persisted until she attempted seduction and then told lies about him, and he was imprisoned for a long time because of her. Al-Saadi: 409.
Question: What is the risk of going along with love which is outside marriage?
