He will be at the forefront of his people to Hellfire since he was their leader. Al-Qurtubi: 11/204.
Question: Whoever leads people to evil in this life, will lead them to Hellfire on the Day of Resurrection. Explain.
Just as they followed him in this life and he was their leader and chief, likewise he will lead them to Hellfire on the Day of Resurrection. He will lead them directly to it, where they will drink from springs of destruction. Pharaoh will have a great share in that awful punishment. Ibn Kathir: 2/440.
Question: Why will Pharaoh be at forefront of his people on the Day of Resurrection?
(But they wronged themselves), they wronged themselves with disbelief and disobedience. Al-Baghawi: 2/423.
Question: How does one wrong himself?
This applies to everyone who turns to other than Allah; it does not avail them anything when calamity strikes. Al-Saadi: 389.
Question: What is the outcome for one who turns to other than Allah?
Even when the lying wicked are given authority, it will, inevitably, disappear, and only their disgrace and infamy will remain; their rise and fall happen very fast. Ibn Taimyah: 3/557.
Question: In light of this verse, how does Allah punish wicked cities?
Of their torments in Hellfire, Allah singles out for mention exhaling and inhaling to repel people from that which lead to Hellfire because the deformation caused by exhaling and inhaling is more frightening than the pain. Ibn Ashur: 12/165.
Question: Allah singles out for mention exhaling and inhaling. Why?
Exhaling is a sound in the throat and inhaling is a sound in the chest. This means that their exhaling will be "Zafir" and their inhaling will be "Shahiq." This will be due to the torment that they will be experiencing. We seek refuge with Allah from such evil. Ibn Kathir: 2/441.
Question: What is the aim for describing the people of Hellfire as having "Zafir" and "Shahiq"?
