His people used to pass by him while working and ridicule him by saying: "O Noah, you became a carpenter after your Prophethood." Al-Baghawi: 2/399.
Question: The high rank of righteous people did not keep the ignorant from ridiculing them. Explain.
Take on board a male and a female from every type of creature, so that different species could survive. Al-Saadi: 382.
Question: Why did Allah command Noah (u) to take on board a pair from every species?
This statement (But none believed with him except a few) gives more information to complete the lesson from the story about the scarcity of the righteous. Ibn Ashur: 12/73.
Question: The righteous are a few among their people. Explain.
This verse proves uttering the name of Allah (bismillah) at the beginning of every action. Al-Qurtubi: 11/121.
Question: What is the practical lesson from this verse?
Concluding the verse with the mention of Allah's forgiveness and mercy indicates that Allah promised Noah (u) that He would save them due to His forgiveness and mercy. Ibn Ashur: 12/74.
Question: The verse concludes with the mention of Allah’s forgiveness and mercy. Why?
No mountain or anything else can protect anybody; even if he takes all possible measures, he will not be saved if Allah does not save him. Al-Saadi: 382.
Question: At the time of crisis, should we rely on causes, or the Lord of causes (Allah)?
(And said, "My Lord, indeed my son is of my family"), meaning: You promised to save my family and Your promise is the truth that does not fail. Therefore, how can he (my son) be drowned and You are the Most Just of the judges? (Allah said, "O Noah, he is not of your family"), meaning: Your son is not of those whom I promised to save; I only promised you that I would save those of your family who believe. For this reason, Allah said, (and your family – except those who have already been decreed [to drown]) Thus, for his son, it had already been decreed that he would be drowned due to his disbelief and his opposition to his father Noah (u). Ibn Kathir: 2/429.
Question: Relatives will benefit each other in the Hereafter on the condition of Islam. Explain.
