The Children of Israel were divided into three groups: A group that broke the Sabbath, a second group who denounced the action of the first group and distanced themselves from them, and a third group who remained silent and distanced themselves, so they neither denounced nor broke the Sabbath. When this third group saw the persistence of the denouncers and the tyranny of the breakers, they said to the denouncers: Why do you denounce a people whom Allah will destroy or torment? They answered: We denounce them to excuse ourselves before Allah, and perhaps they may fear Allah. The Sabbath-breakers were destroyed, and the denouncers were saved, but differences arose concerning whether the third group was destroyed for their silence, or saved for distancing themselves and abstaining from sin. Ibn Juzay: 1/326.
Question: When evil is spread out in a society, people are divided into three groups; what are they? And what is the fate of each group?
The main aim behind objecting to and denouncing evil is so as to discharge one's duty and establish proof against the one to whom it is addressed, in the hope that Allah may guide him, so that he will then comply with what is enjoined or forbidden. Al-Saadi: 307.
Question: What is the main aim behind enjoining good and forbidding evil?
This is the way of Allah in dealing with His servants; when the punishment comes down, He saves those who enjoined what is good and forbade what is evil. Al-Saadi: 307.
Question: What is the benefit, in this life, for those who enjoin good and forbid evil?
This verse mentions both mercy and punishment, so that no despair is felt. Allah often mentions exhortation and intimidation together, so that hearts always have a sense of hope and fear. Ibn Kathir: 2/249.
Question: Allah mentions mercy and punishment together. Why?
(And We tested them with prosperity) with good crops and health. (And adversity) with drought and hardship. (So that they would return), return to the obedience of their Lord and repent to Him. Al-Baghawi: 2/164.
Question: What is wisdom behind testing people with prosperity and adversity?
(And they had studied its teachings) so they had no problem in understanding it. But they did what they did deliberately, aware of what they were doing, and this is a greater sin and more blameworthy, and deserves a more severe punishment. Al-Saadi: 307.
Question: If a sin is committed by two persons, a knowledgeable and an ignorant, what is the difference between their actions?
(Those who hold fast), the Arabic word used for (hold fast) indicates frequent repetition in holding on to the Book of Allah and His Religion. They are praised for that since adherence to the Book of Allah and His Religion requires commitment and repetition. Al-Qurtubi: 9/374.
Question: The Arabic word used for (hold fast) to the Book of Allah has a significant meaning. What is it?
