This dialogue between the leaders and their followers of past nations is narrated by Allah to warn Muslim leaders not to lead their followers to misguidance by allowing them to follow their own desires. Moreover, it warns the followers against indulgence in supporting leaders who encourage them to pursue their own desires, and do not exhort them to do the right thing. Ibn Ashur: 8/125.
Question: What is the benefit of narrating the dialogue between the leaders and their followers?
Each group will not know what happens to the other, for if some of them know that the punishment to others exceeds theirs, it will give them some comfort. Al-Qurtubi: 9/222.
Question: The level of punishment of the people in Hellfire is hidden from each other. Why?
What is meant in this verse is that the gates of Heaven are opened for the souls of the believers who complied with the commands of Allah and believed in His revelations, so that they may ascend to Allah and reach wherever Allah wills they should reach of the higher realm. They will have the joy of being close to their Lord and of earning His good pleasure. Al-Saadi: 288.
Question: What is the benefit in knowing that the souls of disbelievers will not enter the gates of Heaven?
(They will have from Hell a bed) as a mattress, (and over them coverings) as a bed cover; and therefore, they will be surrounded by fire from all sides. Al-Baghawi: 2/103.
Question: As the forbidden worldly pleasures surround the body of the disbeliever, the punishment will also do the same on the Day of Judgment. Explain?
(But those who believed and did righteous deeds) their hearts have believed and they performed good deeds with their limbs and senses, as compared to those who disbelieved in the verses of Allah and were arrogant toward them. Moreover, Allah said that embracing faith and implementing it are easy, (We charge no soul except [within] its capacity). Ibn Kathir: 2/205.
Question: Rejecting faith and guidance is not due to their difficulty. Explain.
Allah says that for those who will be in Paradise, He will remove from their hearts spite, resentment and animosity that they had toward each other when they were in this worldly life, so they will enter Paradise seated on thrones facing one another. They will not envy each other for that which Allah has granted some of them, and rivers will flow beneath them. Al-Tabari: 12/437.
Question: Happiness can be attained by avoiding feelings of envy and spite toward others. Explain in light of this verse.
When one performs good deeds, his action itself is a favor and a blessing from Allah by way of guidance and faith, as people of Paradise will say, (All praise be to Allah Who has guided us to this, for We would not have been guided to this if Allah had not guided us). Ibn Taimyah: 3/162.
Question: Doing good deeds is a favor and a blessing from Allah. Explain in light of this verse.
