In this verse, the male thief is mentioned before the female while in another verse about fornication, the female fornicator is mentioned before the male. What is the reason for that? The answer is: Men have a greater love for money, while women have greater lustful desire, so each is placed in the right order accordingly. Al-Qurtubi: 7/473.
Question: In theft, men are mentioned first while in fornication women are mentioned first. Why?
For a thief to repent, he should regret his actions, cease stealing forever and return what he stole to its rightful owners. Ibn Juzay: 1/236.
Question: What are the conditions of a true repentance for a thief?
The Messenger (ﷺ) was so concerned with people's guidance that he would grieve when someone makes an outward display of faith, then returns to disbelief. Therefore, Allah instructs him not to feel sad or grieved for such people, because they are not worth it; if they are present, they contribute nothing, and if they are absent, no one misses them. Al-Saadi: 231.
Question: Why should we not feel grief at one who renounces his faith?
Rushing to disbelief means displaying its signs at every little occasion with every opportunity, and therefore it is similar to someone who walks rapidly to reach something. Ibn Ashur: 6/198.
Question: What is the meaning of rushing to disbelief?
This refers to the one whose intention in referring for judgement of Sharia is to follow his desires, and if the verdict is in his favor he will accept it, but if it is not then he will resent it, which is an indication that his heart is not pure. Also, if a person refers his opponent to judgement of Sharia, and he accepts the verdict whether it suits him or not, then this is a sign of the purity of the heart. Al-Saadi: 232.
Question: Is everyone who seeks the judgement of Sharia truthful? Who is rewarded for doing that?
This indicates that the purity of the heart is a means of attaining all that is good, and it is the main reason for every good word and righteous deed. Al-Saadi: 232.
Question: Why is the purity of the heart important?
(For them there is disgrace in this world), refers to the hypocrites and Jews. The disgrace of hypocrites is humiliation in public and exposing their hypocrisy. The disgrace of Jews is paying the Jizyah (protection tax) or death, captivity, exile and seeing Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Companions victorious. Al-Baghawi: 1/677.
Question: The disgrace of hypocrites and Jews in this world comes in many ways. What are they?
