Alhasan said: "The accepted Hajj is when a person returns ascetic of this world and eager for the Hereafter." Al-Qurtubi: 3/324
Question: What is the sign of an accepted Hajj?
Encouraging and urging good speech instead of obscenity, and righteousness and piety in morals instead of immorality and argumentation. Al-Qurtubi: 3/328.
Question: Explain the Holy Quran's emphasis on kind words and avoiding offensive speech.
Allah specifically addresses those with understanding, for they have good judgement and can distinguish between truth and falsehood. They have the right thought and knowledge that enable them to see the reality of things that are perceived by the mind and understood by the heart. Those who are ignorant are not addressed by this verse. Al-Tabari: 4/161.
Question: Allah commands only the people of understanding to fear Him. Why?
This verse was revealed about a group of people who went for Hajj without carrying the necessary food and money for the journey, and some of them said: We rely upon Allah. Others said: How is it possible that we visit the House of Allah while He does not feed us? They would remain dependent on people, so they were forbidden from doing so and were ordered to prepare provisions. Ibn Atiyah: 1/273.
Question: Neglecting to take the necessary means to reach an end is not considered reliance upon Allah. Explain.
When Allah prohibits arguing during Hajj, people may presume that this prohibition includes trading also since doing business normally entails arguing, so Allah states the ruling on trading. Al-Alusi: 2/87.
Question: Allah Almighty permits trade during Hajj after forbidding arguing? Why?
Allah combines Thikr (Remembrance of Him) with supplication to indicate that only Thikr with attentive heart is considered, as is the case of the supplicant when he asks for a need, not just the mere utterance of the words. Allah starts with Thikr because it is the key to the answer for supplication, then He mentions those whose love of this world overcomes them, so they only supplicate for it, and those who supplicate Him for the goodness of this world and the Hereafter. Al-Alusi: 2/90.
Question: Allah combines Thikr (Remembrance of Him) with supplication. Why? And why does He start with Thikr?
Ali Bin Abi Talib (t) was asked: "How will Allah hold people accountable on the Day of Judgment despite their large numbers?" He said, "Just as He provides for them despite their large numbers." Ibn Juzay: 1/103.
Question: How will Allah hold people accountable on the Day of Judgement?
