(Those who migrated) they left the land of polytheism and came to the land of faith, leaving behind their loved ones, brethren, friends and neighbors. (And were driven out of their homes) polytheists tormented them and forced them to migrate. (And suffered for My cause) that is: Their only sin before the people was that they believed in Allah Alone. In similar verse, Allah says, (Their only grievance against them was that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, the Praiseworthy) [85:8]. (And who fought and were killed) this is the highest level a Muslim can reach, which is fighting in the cause of Allah. Ibn Kathir: 1/418.
Question: What is the reward for one who migrated, driven out of his home, harmed, or killed in the cause of Allah?
This proves that the disbelievers are not blessed in this world, because the reality of blessing is to be free from the taint of both immediate and deferred harm. The blessings of the disbelievers are tainted with pain and punishment. Therefore, it is like someone who is given a sweetness of honey that contains poison. Even if he enjoys eating it, it is not called a blessing because it will eventually kill him. Al-Qurtubi: 5/481.
Question: Are disbelievers blessed in this life?
A deceived person is happy with that which he is deceived. The disbelievers are deceived by their prosperity, while the believers are mindful of it. A believer may think that this respite is good for the disbelievers, which may lead him to being deceived by what he sees. That is why the verse begins with: (Do not be deceived). Death is good for both, the believer and the disbeliever. As for the disbeliever, death puts an end to his sins. For the believer, it is because what Allah has is best for the righteous. Ibn Atiyah: 1/558.
Question: Why is this word, (deceived), used in the verse?
(For the righteous) meaning: Those who do righteousness, which is the ultimate in piety and good deeds. Some of them said: The righteous are those who do not harm anyone. Ibn Juzay: 1/170.
Question: What is meant by the righteous?
Since their belief was total and real, it became beneficial for them and led them to have fear of Allah that (they do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price). Hence, they do not give precedence to worldly interests over religious interests, as done by deviant people who conceal what Allah has revealed and exchange it for a small price. These good people have come to know the truth of the matter, and realized that the greatest loss is to settle for what is cheap and inferior, and to give it precedence over religious commitment. Al-Saadi: 162.
Question: What is the sign of true faith?
Allah concludes this Surah with what is included in this tenth verse of the commandment which leads to victory over the enemy in this world and winning the bliss of the Hereafter. Hence, He encourages patience in acts of obedience and in refraining from desires. Patience is restraint. Al-Qurtubi: 5/485.
Question: This verse lists few conditions to overcome the enemy and achieve bliss in the Hereafter. What are they?
This verse indicates the condition for answering supplication for victory over the enemy, and reminds those of understanding to be mindful of Allah, The One, The Living, the All-Sustaining. Al-Biqai: 2/203.
Question: What is the condition for answering supplication for victory over the enemy?
