(And whoever turns away) from Islam and acceptance of these admonishments, (then indeed, Allah is the Free of need), for He does not need their worship. (The Praiseworthy) in Himself and His attributes. Al-Qurtubi: 20/405.
Question: The verse concludes with two holy names of Allah. Why?
Despite the kinship ties between them and the disbelievers, Muslims adhered to Allah's command to resent and boycott the disbelievers, and Allah knew their sincerity so He wanted to please them with this verse, where He promised that He will bring about affection between them. This was fulfilled, and the affection was completed after the conquest of Makkah when most of the Quraish tribe members accepted Islam. Ibn Juzay: 2/436.
Question: What is the link between this verse and disassociation from the disbelievers?
(Perhaps Allah will bring about affection between you and those of them whom you hold as enemies), the cause of which will be their turning to faith. (Allah is Most Capable), which includes His being able to guide people's hearts and change them from one state to another. Al-Saadi: 856.
Question: (Allah is Most Capable) is mentioned after stating the possibility of changing the polytheists' enmity to affection. Why?
After Allah mentions what the believers should do concerning the resentment toward the disbelievers and neglecting their friendship, He details who, among the disbelievers, should be treated with kindness and who should not, so He says, (Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion). Al-Shawkani: 5/213.
Question: What is the link between this verse and the one before?
Al-Qushayri said: In general, probing is a way to awareness and the gems inside a soul become manifest by a trial, and whoever ventures upon something without experience, regrets it. Al-Biqai: 19/514.
Question: Probing the inside of the souls is important. Why?
This verse indicates that faith can be recognized and affirmed.
Ibn Kathir: 4/351
Question: Is it possible to affirm the faith of some people?
Allah enjoins that if a Muslim woman [who is married to a disbeliever] is retained [by Muslims], her husband should be compensated for his expenditures [dowry]. This is considered a fulfilment of the covenant, since he is deprived of his wife due to an Islamic prohibition, it is obligatory to return his money to lessen his loss. Al-Qurtubi: 20/414
Question: State an example of a fulfilment of the covenant from this verse.
