One of the greatest proofs of their wickedness is this verse: (We sent Noah to his people, and he lived among them for a thousand years, less fifty)[29:14]. A people who never responded to the call of a noble and sincere Prophet for all this length of time must be the most transgressing and tyrant among all the people. Al-Tabari: 22/573.
Question: Allah describes Noah's people as more wicked and rebellious. Why?
Vain amusements means singing. This interpretation does not contradict what is implied by this verse that vain amusements are heedlessness, since singing contains all that and causes it. Ibn Al-Qayim: 3/85-86.
Question: Vain amusements have many interpretations by righteous predecessors. How do reconcile them?
The command to prostrate to Allah in particular serves to highlight the virtue of this action, which is the core and essence of worship, the core and essence of which is humility before Allah and submission to Him. Prostration is the greatest manifestation of humility and submission, in which a person’s heart and body are in a state of humility, as he places his noblest faculties on the lowly ground, which is the place where feet tread. Al-Saadi: 823.
Question: This verse indicates the virtue of prostration. How?
The miracle of the moon splitting asunder was made to remind people about the nearness of the coming of the Hour, where a heavenly body like the moon, which is linked to the earth, went through an extraordinary change. This calls for alerting people to the potential perishing of this world. The past tense is used in this verse to reflect reality. Ibn Ashur: 27/168.
Question: What is the link between (The Hour has come near) and (and the moon has split asunder)?
Meaning: The time for the Day of Resurrection is nearing, which serves as a warning from Allah to His servants that the Day of Resurrection is near and so is the end of this world. Moreover, Allah enjoins His servants to be ready for the horrors of the Day of Resurrection before it comes upon them suddenly while they are heedless. Al-Tabari: 22/565.
Question: Allah tells His servants about the nearness of the Day of Resurrection. What is the purpose of that?
Al-Qushayri said: When desires are followed, it is considered a bad omen that leads to denial, for Allah confuses the heart of the follower of desires so that he becomes unable to see the right way. In contrast, following the truth is linked to believing, for Allah enlightens the insight of the follower of truth to become a believer. Al-Biqai: 4/312.
Question: What is the outcome of following the desires?
Meaning: The deeds of every person will eventually catch up with him. The righteous deeds will settle the believers in Paradise while evil deeds will settle the disbelievers in the Fire. Al-Qurtubi: 20/75.
Question: What is meant by: (Every matter will reach its inevitable end)?
