Meaning: It is not possible that their minds prompted them to say such things because prudent minds do not prompt such things. This alludes to the fact that they actually lost their minds by saying that since sound minds do not prompt such things, and so, they resemble mindless people. This explains what is narrated that the disbeliever lacks a mind. Ibn Ashur: 27/64.
Question: How do you explain the saying that the disbeliever lacks a mind?
Meaning: Their minds prompt them to say these contradicting accusations about the Prophet (ﷺ) that he was a soothsayer or a madman. A soothsayer is exceedingly intelligent and insightful, while a madman lacks a basic mind, let alone intelligence or insight. Al-Shawkani: 5/99.
Question: Explain the polytheists contradicting accusations about the Prophet (ﷺ).
(If they are truthful), in their claim that he (ﷺ) made it up, hence, if they could not produce a statement like it, then they are liars. This entices them to try to match the Quran so that when they could not do it, it would be evidence of their lies. Ibn Ashur: 27/67.
Question: What is the purpose of the statement (If they are truthful), mentioned in the verse?
Normally, it is not possible for a person, who belongs to a group of people, and shares similar capabilities with them, to produce something so great that they all are unable to match it. A sane person will not assert something [producing the like of the Quran] without being fully aware of it. Their awareness entails their capability to match the Quran. The Prophet (ﷺ) shares with them eloquent speech, home, and kinship ties. In fact, some of them may exceed him in writing, poetry, mixing with scholars, practicing oratory, producing letters, etc. So, the Prophet (ﷺ) was capable of bringing something inimitable only with divine help, and that was the aim of their denial. Al-Biqai: 19/26.
Question: This verse presents a clear proof of the truthfulness of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) Message. Explain
Meaning: Not a small or great, even though in this world they may be able to survive for a short time by means of their plots. But on the Day of Resurrection, their plots will come to naught, and their efforts will prove worthless. Al-Saadi: 818.
Question: What is the difference between the disbelievers' plots in this life and in the Hereafter?
It is said that they will be punished before their death. Ibn Zaid said: The punishments are worldly afflictions such as deceases, disasters, and the loss of wealth and offspring. Al-Qurtubi: 19/541.
Question: Allah’s punishment of the wrongdoer is not limited to the Hereafter. Explain.
This is attained by performing Al-Fajr prayer and its sunnah since that is when the stars fade away. Hence, the morning worship is exhorted twice to honor its status because it is a reason for being saved from imminent punishment, and a cause for achieving victory over a well-armed enemy of the apparent and deceitful hypocrites. Al-Biqai: 19/39.
Question: When the stars fade away is a time singled out for praying and glorification of Allah. Why?
