At first, a person may have a suspicion about something, so he would start spying, searching, watching, and listening in order to investigate his suspicion. Hence, the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade that. It is fair to say that suspicions that have no valid telltale signs must be avoided. Al-Qurtubi: 19/396.
Question: What are the forbidden suspicions according to Sharia?
Abu Qilaba Al-Raqashi said: I heard Aba A'sim saying: I have never backbite anyone since I knew what backbiting may entail. Maimun [bin Mahran] never used to backbite anyone, nor let someone do that in his presence, or else he would leave the place. Al-Qurtubi: 19/404.
Question: Narrate two examples of how the righteous predecessors warned against backbiting.
Allah likens backbiting to eating dead flesh because the dead is not aware of being eaten just like the absent person is not aware of being defamed. Ibn Abbas (k) said: Allah presents this example for backbiting because eating dead flesh is prohibited and revolting, and so is backbiting which is prohibited in religion and abhorrent to the souls. Qatadah said: As any of you would never eat the flesh of his dead brother, he must refrain from backbiting him alive. Al-Qurtubi: 19/403.
Question: The example of backbiting is like eating the flesh of the dead. How?
Omar bin Al-Khattab (t) said: Beware of mentioning people, for it is like sickness; and focus on remembering Allah, for it is a healing. Ali bin Alhusain (k) heard someone backbiting another, so he said: Beware of backbiting because it is food for the dogs among people. Some people said to Amr bin Obaid: We heard someone was backbiting you so much that we felt merciful toward you. He replied: You should have been merciful toward him. A man said to Alhasan: I was told that you backbit me, he replied: To me, you are not worth putting you in control of good deeds. Al-Qurtubi: 19/404.
Question: State the saying of one of the righteous predecessors about backbiting.
The basis for prohibiting backbiting is the brotherhood of faith, hence, its prohibition is strengthened commensurate with the believer's level of faith; the greater faith he has, the more incriminating is to backbite him. Ibn Taimyah: 6/62.
Question: Is backbiting the believers the same for all of them? Explain in light of this verse.
Allah makes clear that He made people into nations and tribes so that they may be able to know and differentiate one another, not to feel haughty toward each other and transgress against others. The fact that some are better than others is due to reasons other than lineage, and Allah makes clear this fact by saying, (Indeed, the most noble of you before Allah is the most righteous). Hence, nobility and distinguishment among people are based on righteousness, not on lineage. Al-Shanqiti: 7/417.
Question: This verse clarifies and sets right the criteria of distinguishment among people. Explain.
(Indeed, the believers), the true believers are those who combine faith and Jihad in His cause, because if a person strives against the disbelievers, that is indicative of complete faith in his heart, for whoever strives against others in support of Islam and striving to establish its laws, it is more likely that he will strive against himself to establish Islam and its laws in his own life. Al-Saadi: 802.
Question: In this verse, Allah combines faith and Jihad for the true believer. Why?
