In breaking his pledge, he would be out of those whom Allah promised them with Paradise for keeping their allegiance, so he would harm no one but himself. As for Allah’s Messenger, Allah would help and give him victory over his enemies, regardless of who kept or who broke his allegiance. Al-Tabari: 22/210.
Question: Who will be harmed when man forsakes his religion?
They did not ask for forgiveness in sincerity, rather, it was done in ridicule, and what is in their hearts contradicts what they say, hence, Allah exposed them by saying, (They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts), which is the way of hypocrites. Al-Shawkani: 5/48.
Question: What was the true intention of hypocrites when they asked Prophet’s (ﷺ) for forgiveness?
No one can ward off the harm or benefit coming from Allah. Being preoccupied with families and wealth is not an acceptable excuse, because it will not keep you from harm if Allah wills it, nor will confronting the enemy prevent you from attaining good if Allah wills that for you. Al-Alusi: 13/253.
Question: Is being preoccupied with families and wealth instead of standing up for religion an acceptable excuse?
Their evil assumption was made appealing to them because they did not make the positive assumption that the Messenger would return home safely. This mirrored their weak minds and lowly souls that would consider only the first suggestion. Ibn Ashur: 26/164.
Question: Allah allures the hypocrites by making their evil assumption about the believers appealing to them. Explain in light of this verse.
Forgiveness precedes punishment here, (He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills) to reinforce hope in their hearts so they hasten to make up for the past, and it is a prelude for the promise mentioned in this verse, (Say to those who remained behind of the Bedouins) until this verse (Then if you obey, Allah will give you a goodly reward). Ibn Ashur: 26/166.
Question: Forgiveness precedes punishment in this verse. Why?
Meaning: They wish to change Allah's promise to the people of Al-Hudaybiya, when He promised to compensate them for the booties of Makkah with that of Khaibar and its conquest and to be exclusively for them. Those who remained wanted that to be shared with them, and that was the change they sought after. Ibn Juzay: 2/349.
Question: Those who remained and hypocrites were concerned only with booties. Explain in light of this verse.
(Rather, you envy us), this is the best that they can come up with concerning this matter. If they were mature enough, they would have realized that their being deprived of a share was because of their sin and that sins have consequences in both worldly and spiritual terms. Hence, Allah says: (Rather they do not understand but a little). Al-Saadi: 793
Question: What is the real reason for depriving the hypocrites of the booties of Khaibar?
