At the end of this verse, there is an exhortation to the Prophet to pardon them for ascribing fabrication to him, which is mentioned at the beginning of the verse. It encourages him to extend kindness to them, and exhorts them to repent to Allah. Al-Biqai: 18/132
Question: The verse ends with (the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful). Why?
This is a threat, a hard intimidation, and a stern warning to them. Then Allah says, (and He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful), which is an encouragement for them to repent and turn to Him. It means that despite all of this, if you turn back and repent, Allah will accept your repentance, pardon you, forgive you, and have mercy upon you. Ibn Kathir: 4/157.
Question: In His Book, Allah always combines exhortation and intimidation. Explain light of this verse.
Meaning: I have not brought something different from what previous Messengers had. Just as you have heard about them stating that they were sent by Allah, I was too. Hence, why do disbelievers wonder about my Message? This verse can be used to respond to the Christians of present times who defame the Prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ) using baseless allegations with no purpose except misguiding their masses, as the defamers are intelligent enough to realize their slanders. Ibn Ashur: 26/17.
Question: Using this verse, how do you respond to Christians?
Contrary to this, is the position of Ahl Al-Sunnah who say about any act or saying that has not been reported from the Companions (j) that it is an innovation, for if there was any good in it, they would have preceded us in doing it, because they have not left off any of the good qualities except that they hurried to perform them. Ibn Kathir: 4/159.
Question: What is the difference between the saying of the polytheists and that of Ahl Al-Sunnah?
They are those who combine the Oneness of Allah, which is the essence of knowledge with the steadfastness in religion, which is the essence of practice. Al-Alusi: 25/240.
Question: What is meant by (those who say, "Our Lord is Allah", then remain steadfast)?
(They will have no fear): This indicates that Allah's reverence does not cease when witnessing His Majesty, Subjugation, Omnipotence, Grandeur, and Perfection. When one evokes these great attributes of Allah, he becomes humbled, attains serenity, dignity, and tranquility, which increase his status and wholeness. The negated fear in this verse is that which is worrisome to the soul. Al-Biqai: 18/144.
Question: What is the negated fear in this verse?
The servants' shortcomings persist, hence, they are in need of Allah's pardon and forgiveness, for no one will enter Paradise because of his righteous deeds alone. Everyone has sins for which he needs Allah's forgiveness, (If Allah were to take people to task for what they did, He would not leave a single living being on earth) [35:45]. Moreover, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The good deeds alone of any person will not entitle him to enter Paradise." This does not contradict what Allah says, (As a reward for what they used to do) [32:17] because the servant's righteous deeds are no match for Allah's reward despite the fact that they are the cause for the reward. Therefore, whoever thinks that he has done what is required of him and does not need Allah's forgiveness and pardon, is, indeed, misguided. Ibn Taimyah: 5/549.
Question: How do you reconcile the Prophetic Hadith, "The good deeds of any person will not entitle him to enter Paradise." and this verse, (As a reward for what they used to do)?
