Someone may ask: Why is the phrase, (I have been commanded) repeated while it indicates similar meanings in both places? The answer is: The first command is to worship with sincerity, while the second command is to hasten to Islam. Hence, they convey two different meanings. Ibn Juzay: 2/266.
Question: The phrase, (I have been commanded) is repeated to exhort two things. What are they?

Because I am the one who calls and guides people to their Lord, which dictates that I should be the first one to comply with what I enjoin, and the first one to submit to Allah in Islam. This should be the case on the part of Muhammad (ﷺ) and on the part of those who claim to be his followers. Al-Saadi: 721.
Question: The Holy Quran exhorts Muslims to hold fast to the religion. Explain in light of this verse.

Meaning: They will be separated and will never meet again, whether their families have gone to Paradise while they have gone to Hell, or all of them have gone to Hell, they will never meet or feel happiness again. Ibn Kathir: 4/49.
Question: If the disobedient people enter the Fire on the Day of Resurrection with their families, will they be happy with them?

Ibn Abbas said: "This refers to one who listens to the good speech and the bad one, but speaks the good and turns away from the bad." Moreover, it is said: “They listen to the Quran and other things, and follow the Quran." Al-Qurtubi: 18/260.
Question: listening to speech and following the best of it. How?

This refers to all that is said. They listen to all types of speech that they hear, in order to distinguish between what should be given precedence and what should be avoided. It is a sign of their prudence and maturity in thinking that they follow the best of speech. The best of all speech is the words of Allah and the words of His Messenger (r), as Allah mentions later in this Surah: (Allah has sent down the best message – a consistent Book of repeated lessons) [39:23]. The one who does not distinguish between good words and bad words is not one of those of sound reasoning. As for the one who distinguishes between them, but his whims and desires overwhelm his rational thinking, and his rational thinking becomes captive to his whims and desires, so, he does not give precedence to what is best, then he is a man of no understanding. Al-Saadi: 722.
Question: How would you judge someone as having sound reasoning?

They listen to the Quran, and follow its best through their deeds, like choosing to forgive rather than retaliate, and akin to that. Ibn Juzay: 2/267.
Question: In light of the interpretation of this verse, how can someone follow the best of speech?

Here, the verb (save) brings a comparison of the attitude of the Prophet (ﷺ) toward the disbelievers, where he was keen to guide them while they were immersed in what would lead them to the Fire, to someone who tries to save another who is in the middle of the Fire and surrounded by it. Ibn Ashur: 23/371.
