Meaning: They do not own anything, small or great, not even the thin membrane of a date stone, which is the most insignificant of things. Describing specifically something that they do not own indicates a general meaning, which is that they do not own anything else either, so how can they be called upon when they do not own anything in heaven or on earth?! Al-Saadi: 686.
Question: What is the benefit for man to know that those of which invoked besides Allah do not own anything?
Allah reveals the reality of the idols in order to show their uselessness for the idolators in the worldly life, and that Allah will make the idols speak, in the Hereafter, to renounce their shirk, and deny calling them to do it or be content with it. Ibn Ashur: 22/283.
Question: Allah nullifies idols worshiping in worldly life and in the Hereafter. How?
After much proof and admonishments were presented, it did not appear that the idolators would break with their misguidance, and the eminent among them may have felt self-importance and conceit that they were very much sought after to join the Muslim community, which would make them susceptible to the devil’s temptation of insisting on their shirk. Therefore, Allah informs them that He is the Self-Sufficient Who is Free of need for them, and that His religion will not be honored by the likes of them; they will perish, and Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people who will defend Islam. Ibn Ashur: 22/285.
Question: What is the wisdom behind describing all mankind as in need of Allah?
Allah addresses all people and informs them about their real situation and that they are in need of Allah in all ways. They are in need of His bringing them into existence; if it was not for His bringing them into existence, they would not exist. They are in need of His giving them physical strength, faculties, and senses; if it was not for His giving them these things, they would not be able to do any deeds. They are in need of His providing them with nourishment, provision, and blessings, both visible and hidden; if it was not for His bestowing His bounty and kindness, and making things easy for them, they would not have attained any provisions or blessings. They are in need of His warding off harm from them, averting troubles, and relieving them of stress and hardship. Al-Saadi: 687.
Question: Is people's need of Allah limited to wealth only? List some aspects of their need of Allah.
Allah affirms their need for Him, and that He is the Self-Sufficient, but not every wealthy is useful unless he is generous and giving. Allah mentions (Praiseworthy) to indicate that He is the Self-Sufficient whose wealth is beneficial to His creations, the Generous and Bestower upon them. Al-Qurtubi: 17/366.
Question: In this verse, Allah’s Attributes, (the Self-Sufficient) and (Praiseworthy) are mentioned together. Why?
Ibn Abbas (k) said: A father or a mother will meet their son, and say: "O son, bear some of my sins for me," but he will reply: "I cannot, for I have enough of my own sins." Al-Baghawi: 3/621.
Question: Who will bear your sins for you on the Day of Resurrection?
Meaning: Warning will only benefit those who fear Allah, but warning should not be limited to them. Ibn Juzay: 2/215.
Question: Does this verse imply that Messengers and preachers warn those who fear Allah only. Explain.
