(Allah is the Ally of those who believe): Allah is their Defender and Helper; also, it is said that He loves them, or He is their Guardian Who never abandons them. Alhasan said: He is the guardian of their guidance. Al-Baghawi: 1/273.
Question: Allah is the Ally of the believers. What does that mean?
Allah mentions the light in the singular form and mentions the darkness in the plural because truth is one and disbelief is of many kinds, all of which are false. Ibn Kathir: 1/295.
Question: Light is mentioned in the singular form while darkness is mentioned in the plural. Why?
Allah brings them forth from the darkness of disbelief, sin and ignorance to the light of faith, obedience and knowledge. Their reward for that is that He grants them safety from the darkness of the grave, the gathering and the resurrection, and blesses them with eternal bliss, comfort, ease and joy. Al-Saadi: 111.
Question: What darkness does the believer come out of when he believes, and what light does he receive?
Disbelief is called darkness because of its obscure way, while Islam is called light due to its clear way. Al-Baghawi: 1/273.
Question: Allah calls disbelief darkness and calls Islam light. Why?
Allah increases the guidance of those who are guided, because following Islam makes the paths of certainty easier, so they become more deeply rooted in it with every passing day. The opposite is true for those who chose disbelief over Islam, because their choice of that indicates that their minds have been sealed, so they were not guided, and they go deeper into misguidance with every passing day. Ibn Ashur: 3/30.
Question: Man is bound to progress either in goodness or in evil. Explain in light of this verse.
Elkiya Al-Harrasi (a religious scholar) said: This verse proves that arguing about religion is permissible. Al-Alusi: 3/19.
Question: Is it permissible to argue about religion?
Meaning: He is the only One Who has full control over everything. Abraham (u) specified the giving of life and causing death because they are the greatest levels of control. Al-Saadi: 111.
Question: Abraham singled out the giving of life and causing death for mention. Why?
