These are the real men, while others only appear outwardly to be men, as they have fallen short in terms of manly characteristics. Al-Saadi: 661.
Question: What is the reality of manhood?
Linking their punishment to Allah's Will to indicate the vastness of Allah's mercy, and that He does not want them to lose hope in seeking His forgiveness through repentance so that He accepts it. Ibn Ashur: 21/309.
Question: In this verse, why is the punishment linked to Allah's Will?
(Or accept their repentance) by guiding them to repent and turn back to Him. This is more likely to be the case because Allah is the Most Generous. Hence, the verse ends with two divine names that are indicative of forgiveness, grace and kindness. Al-Saadi: 662.
Question: This verse ends with Allah's Holy Names: The All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Why?
(And Allah spared the believers from fighting) by sending upon their enemies wind and armies of angels until they fled, and their allies, Bani Quraithah, fled to their fortresses to be overcome by terror. Al-Qurtubi: 16/115.
Question: Due to Allah's Power and Might, He has armies that are known only to Him. Explain, given this verse.
(And a land on which you have not yet set foot), this was a promise of conquering a land on which Muslims had not yet set foot, such as Makkah, Yemen, the Levant, Iraq, and Egypt. Allah made the Muslims inherit all that plus what lies beyond them from the east and west. Ibn Juzay: 2/186.
Question: Describe the miraculous aspect in this statement (And a land on which you have not yet set foot).
Giving the choice to the Prophet's wives had many benefits, such as, showing their nobleness, high status, and firm resolve since they had chosen Allah, His Messenger, and the home of the Hereafter over the gains of this worldly life. Al-Saadi: 663.
Question: This choice led to a higher status for the Mothers of the believers. Explain.
Punishments are commensurate with the level of sacred ordinances; violating a higher sacred ordinance warrants a higher punishment. Hence, the prescribed punishment for a free man is multiplied as opposed to that for a slave. The same thing is said about a married person as opposed to a single one. Al-Qurtubi: 16/133.
Question: Does the sin become multiplied when committed by a person of higher status?
