(A sign for all people), since those who did not see Noah's Ark can see the ships and envision the Ark, and how it was constructed by inspiration from Allah to save Noah (u) and whomever Allah wills. Moreover, those who were close to this event talked about it, and its news has become spread through the times and places. Ibn Ashur: 20/223.
Question: How did Noah's Ark become a sign for all people?
Abraham (u) said: (idols), which indicates attentional dispersion due to multiple gods; multiplicity leads to division, and no good can come out of it. Al-Biqai: 14/407.
Question: In this verse, the word, (idols) is plural. Why?
(So seek): Indicates exerting an effort, since Allah's way is providing provision to those who make the effort to attain it. The effort can be through worship and reliance on Allah, or by the apparent pursuit of adopting its worldly means to attain it, but the helpless is the one who follows his own whims, and then indulges in wishful thinking about Allah. Al-Biqai: 14/412-413.
Question: The verse points to the fact that attaining provision requires pursuing its means. How?
(And observe how He began creation), observe their great multitude, different images, and the diversity of their tongues, colors, and qualities. Reflect on the dwellings of previous nations, their ruins, what they left behind, and how Allah destroyed them, so you will know His perfect power. Al-Qurtubi: 17/352.
Question: Mention three examples of Allah's power.
Meaning: You will be returned to that realm where you will be subjected to punishment or mercy, so seek in this realm that which will be the cause of His mercy, by doing acts of obedience, and keep away from that which will be the cause of His wrath, namely acts of disobedience. Al-Saadi: 629.
Question: How does the Muslim benefit from knowing that the final return will be to Allah?
Punishment is mentioned first because it addresses those who deny the resurrection, and their share will be punishment. Ibn Ashur: 20/232.
Question: Punishment is mentioned first in this verse. Why?
The disbelievers' despair has two possibilities: Either it will be in the Hereafter, or it describes their situation in this worldly life, since the disbeliever does not hope for Allah's mercy, but the believer combines both, hope in Allah's mercy, and fear of His punishment. Ibn Juzay: 2/157.
Question: What is the difference between how the believer and the disbeliever view Allah's mercy?
