(You were not on the western side), this is addressed to our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), in order to affirm his absence from Moses’ situation, yet he is informed about it. (The western): Is the western side of Mount Tur at which Allah spoke to Moses, and the command was Prophethood. (Nor did you witness that event), you were not present there; meaning: You did not attend there in order to witness all these unknown events that We inform you about, but their news came to you through Our revelation. Hence, people must hasten to believe in your Prophethood. Ibn Juzay: 2/145.
Question: The story of Moses (ﷺ) is proof that this Quran is from Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger. How?
Knowledge vanished, and Allah's revelations were forgotten. Then We sent you at a time when there was a great need for you, and for that which We have taught you and revealed to you. Al-Saadi: 617.
Question: When is the time the presence of a preacher is most needed to remind and teach people?
Allah took covenants from Moses and his people to believe and support Muhammad (ﷺ), but after a long time passed on them, and generations succeeded one another, they forgot these covenants and failed to keep them. Al-Baghawi: 3/443.
Question: What did Moses' people forget after a long time passed on them?
Meaning: For the disbelief and sins that they committed. All deeds are attributed to the hands, since most of the are, even if some are not committed by hands. Al-Alusi: 10/297.
Question: Hands are a blessing from Allah, which can be used for good and evil. Explain.
This indicates that anyone who does not respond to the Messenger (ﷺ), but follows a view contrary to that of the Messenger (ﷺ), then, he is not following true guidance; rather he is following whims and desires. Al-Saadi: 618.
Question: What is the sign of following desires, which is mentioned in this verse?
Desires are the drives of the soul without knowledge. Hence, whoever acts upon what his soul wants without knowledge showing its benefit, is a follower of his desire. The knowledge of what is beneficial for anyone in the Hereafter is what the Messengers brought. Ibn Taimyah: 5/83.
Question: What is meant by desires that are followed by the people of falsehood?
Following desires without using reason on how to be saved will lead to infinite miseries. Ibn Ashur: 20/141.
Question: Why is there no more astray than one who follows his desire?
