The preceding verses nullify the divinity of the polytheists' idols through clear proofs, and the creed of shirk is abolished, then comes this verse to eliminate one of the remnants of shirk, which was the claim to know the unseen through divination and words from jinn. Ibn Ashur: 20/19.
Question: These verses eliminate one of the remnants of shirk. What is it?
Here Allah relates the situation of these disbelievers that they do not know when the Hereafter will come, then He discloses that their knowledge of the Hereafter is weak, then, He says that they are in doubt concerning it, rather they are blind to it, then He affirms that they deny it, and think it is unlikely to happen. Because of these doubts, fear of the Hereafter left their hearts; as a result, they had the audacity to disobey Allah, and it became easy for them to deny the truth and believe in falsehood, so they indulged in their physical desires, and kept away from worshiping Allah. Thus, they lost out both in this world and in the Hereafter. Al-Saadi: 609.
Question: What made the disbelievers have the audacity to commit sins?
Allah warned them through the example of previous denying nations, and commanded His Prophet to enjoin them to travel the land and see the ruins of these wicked nations, and take heed. Ibn Atiyah: 4/269.
Question: What is the benefit of reading about the wicked and their history?
The Prophet's (ﷺ) mercy and compassion for his people was overwhelming, hence he was moved by this warning to his people, therefore, Allah strengthened his heart by encouraging him not to grieve over them if they are punished. Ibn Ashur: 20/26.
Question: This verse indicates the Prophet's (ﷺ) mercy toward his people. How?
This is a special news for the Prophet (ﷺ), indicating that the delayed punishment is an effect of Allah's mercy, since a delayed time is a respite to them, which is a blessing for them. Ibn Ashur: 20/28.
Question: Delaying the punishment is an effect of Allah's mercy. Explain.
This verse reveals that they had more disgraceful actions than what was told about them. The word (conceal) comes first to indicate that concealing and declaring are the same to Allah's knowledge, or what is hidden inside is the reason for what appears on the outside. Al-Alusi: 10/228.
Question: What is the benefit of mentioning the concealed knowledge first? How do you infer from this verse the importance of hearts’ deeds?
Meaning: Had they believed in this Quran, it would explain to them that over which they differ. Al-Qurtubi: 16/204.
Question: When we differ over a particular matter, where can we find the answer?
