The point is: Beware, O you who disbelieve in Muhammad and deny the Message that he has brought from his Lord, lest the same thing that befell them befall you also, since Muhammad (ﷺ) is nobler and greater than Moses, and his proof is stronger than that of Moses. Ibn Kathir: 3/345-346.
Question: This verse warns against disbelieving in Muhammad (ﷺ) while its subject is about those disbelieved in Moses. Explain.
This is a sign of a person being blessed: That he is grateful to Allah for His bounty, both spiritual and worldly, and he sees all blessings from his Lord, but he does not boast about them, and he is not filled with self-admiration because of them. Rather, he sees that this requires him to give a great deal of thanks. Al-Saadi: 602.
Question: In light of this verse, explain the effect of blessings on righteous people.
Meaning: He inherited him in kingship and Prophethood. What is meant here is not wealth, because if that were the case, Solomon would not have been singled out from among the sons of David, for the wealth of the Prophets cannot be inherited. Ibn Kathir: 3/346.
Question: Faith, knowledge, and wisdom are the best thing a son inherits from his father. Explain in light of this verse.
Al-Zajjaj said: Most of the Prophet's laughter is smiling, hence, laughter means smiling. Al-Baghawi: 3/391.
Question: How was the laughter of the Prophets (p)?
This verse proves the duty of the ruler in taking notice of his subjects, and looking after them. Seeing how the hoopoe, despite its tiny size, did not scape the notice of Solomon, then, how about what is bigger than that. May Allah have mercy on Omar bin Al-Khattab (t) who followed Solomon’s example when he said: “If a goat at the bank of Euphrates is taken by a wolf, Omar will be questioned about it.” Al-Qurtubi: 16/131.
Question: Is becoming head of state an honor and privilege, or a duty and responsibility that the person will be questioned about it? Explain in view of this verse.
Meaning: A clear reason for his absence. This is indicative of his perfect piety and fairness; he did not simply swear to punish or kill him, because that could only be in the case of committing a sin, and there could have been a clear excuse for his absence. Therefore, he made this exception, because of his piety and discernment. Al-Saadi: 604.
Question: This verse indicates Solomon's piety, and prudence. How?
This incident proves that the weakest creature may achieve something that the strongest cannot. Hence, scholars should belittle their knowledge and attribute the knowledge of everything to Allah. Moreover, this refutes the claim by Shia that nothing is hidden from their Imam, and that no one is more knowledgeable than him. Al-Biqai: 14/150.
Question: Despite Solomon's (u) wide knowledge and kingdom, the hoopoe knew what he did not. What does that indicate?
