Allah says: If We were to show mercy to those who disbelieve in the Hereafter and end the drought, barrenness and hardship of hunger (they would still persist in their transgression), they would still persist in their insolence and lack of reserve toward their Lord. (Wandering blindly), means hesitating. Al-Tabari: 19/59.
Question: When the disbelievers are punished with adversity in worldly life, it will not be lifted. Explain in light of this verse.
Allah says: We seized these polytheists with our punishment, sent down upon them our torment and wrath, restricted their provisions, made their land barren and killed their leaders by the sword (but they did not humble themselves to their Lord), they did not submit to their Lord by following His commands and reverting to His obedience. (Nor did they supplicate in humility), they were not subservient to Him. Al-Tabari: 19/60.
Question: Allah sends down His punishment upon disobedient people in order to reform them. How?
(Nor did they supplicate in humility), or acknowledge their need for Him; rather they went through it, then they recovered as if nothing had happened to them, and they continued in their misguidance and disbelief. But ahead of them is a punishment that cannot be warded off, as Allah says, (Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment). Al-Saadi: 556.
Question: Heedlessness to warning signs leads to torment afterward. Explain, given this verse.
Allah mentions hearing, sight, and hearts because of their immense benefits, hence, thanks must be offered to their Creator. Thanking Allah is believing in His Oneness, and following His Messenger (ﷺ). Mentioning them is counting the blessings and making a case for the religion. Ibn Juzay: 2/76.
Question: Among all organs of the body, Allah singles out these three organs, why? What benefit is gained in mentioning them?
These verses prove that debating the disbelievers and making good arguments against them is permitted. Al-Qurtubi: 15/80.
Question: Is it permitted for a knowledgeable person to debate the disbelievers to guide them?
(And He protects) whomever He wills; He protects whomever He wants so that no one can harm him. (While none can protect against Him), no one can shield someone whom Allah wants to afflict with adversity. Al-Jaza’iri: 3/535.
Question: The verse contains assurance to the believer. Explain.
Meaning: Allah protects, and no one can be shielded against Him. It is said: (He protects), He safeguards whomever He wills. (While none can protect against Him), no one can safeguard another whom Allah wants to destroy. When Allah wants to destroy someone, none can stop that, and when Allah wants to help and safeguard someone, none can keep that from happening. Al-Qurtubi: 15/79.
Question: How can you benefit from knowing the meaning of this verse?
