(To deviate), to incline from the right thing. (Evildoing), is a general term that varies from disbelief to minor sins, because committing sins in Makkah is more grave than in other places. Moreover, it is said that it means making unlawful acts as lawful. Ibn Juzay: 2/54.
Question: Allah honors His Sacred House. How does the verse indicate this fact?
Purifying the House of Allah is a general command that includes purifying it from disbelief, innovative acts, all impurities and shedding of blood. Al-Qurtubi: 14/359.
Question: Explain how the House of Allah should be purified.
And what Allah promised came to pass, people came to it on foot and riding, from east and west. Al-Saadi: 537.
Question: This verse contains a Quranic miracle related to informing about the unseen. Explain.
The wisdom behind ordaining the pilgrimage is strengthening the belief in the Oneness of Allah through witnessing the building for which it was established, hence, the meaning of Tawhīd (Oneness of Allah) becomes deeply rooted in the souls that are normally inclined toward physical things. Moreover, mental comprehension is strengthened by witnessing physical signs. Ibn Ashur: 17/243.
Question: What is the wisdom behind ordaining the pilgrimage?
Qatadah said: "It is called (Freed) because Allah freed it from the destructive hands of tyrants, thus no one of them ever had control over it." Sufyan bin Uyaynah said: "It is called (Freed) because it is never owned by anyone." Al-Baghawi: 3/216.
Question: Why is the Sacred Mosque called the called (Freed House)?
Meaning: Whoever avoids disobeying Allah, does not transgress what is sacred and regards committing sin as a very serious matter, then (it is best for him in the sight of his Lord), just as the one who does acts of obedience will earn a great reward, so too, the one who avoids sin will earn a great reward. Ibn Kathir: 3/212.
Question: How can a Muslim receive a great reward without, physically, doing something?
Describing the idols as "impure", because the belief in their divinity constitutes a moral impurity in the souls similar to the clinging of filth to the bodies. Ibn Ashur: 17/253.
Question: The idols are described as "impure" in this verse. Why?
