In this verse, forgetfulness means abandonment. (You will be forgotten) abandoned in punishment. Ibn Atiyah: 4/69.
Question: What is meant by forgetfulness in this verse?
Because it never ends, unlike worldly punishment, which does come to an end. So, what is required is to fear Allah and beware of the punishment of the Hereafter. Al-Saadi: 516.
Question: A Muslim may face hardships in his life, how can he learn from this verse to alleviate these hardships?
Allah commanded His Prophet (ﷺ) to continue to purify himself and his family with prayer, and turn away from worldly adornments that Allah Had given to the disbelievers; and He promised him that the best outcome is for the righteous. Ibn Ashur: 16/337.
Question: When the abuse of the polytheists increases, the Muslim should turn to purifying and strengthening himself through worshiping in order to stand firm against their abuse. Explain in light of this verse.
This verse indicates that if an individual notices in himself any aspiration for the adornment of this world and finds himself interested in pursuing it, he should remind himself of what lies ahead in the Hereafter of the provision of his Lord, and he should weigh up the two matters. Al-Saadi: 517.
Question: A Muslim, sometimes, aspires to be among those who are enjoying the pleasures of this worldly life. How should he deal with that feeling?
Enjoining prayer also implicitly enjoins everything without which it cannot be completed. Hence, this is a command to teach them how to pray, teach them what could invalidate the prayer, and teach them how to pray properly. If the servant performs his prayer in the manner enjoined, he will be more careful and observant with regard to other matters of his religion, but if he neglects it, he will be more careless with regard to other matters. Al-Saadi: 517.
Question: Enjoining the family to perform prayer, how should that be done? Among all acts of worship, why is prayer singled out for enjoining and being steadfast therein?
(We ask no provision from you), We do not ask you to provide provision for your and your family, so you and your family dedicate yourselves for prayer because We will give you provision. When one of righteous predecessors lacked provision for his family, he used to say to them: "Get up and pray, as Allah commanded you as such," then he recited this verse. Ibn Juzay: 2/29.
Question: This verse contains a great bounty and one of the benefits of prayer. What is it?
Meaning: We do not ask you to provide provision for yourself and for them, and be distracted from prayer, rather, We will take care of your provision and theirs. When the Prophet (ﷺ) family faced some hardships, he would command them to pray. Al-Qurtubi: 14/165.
Question: Is being distracted from prayer by pursuing provision an excuse? What is your advice to one who is distracted from prayer by his job?
