This verse points to the fact that safety on land is a great blessing from Allah that you often forget. If the land should swallow you up, you will be doomed with no chance for escape, which is in contrast to the adversity at sea. Ibn Ashur: 15/162.
Question: Safety on land is a great blessing that we often forget. How does this verse indicate that?
The reliable explanation for this preference is that it is based on the human ability to reason which is the basis of accountability. Moreover, through this ability, man knows about Allah, understands His Words, and believes in His reward and Messengers. Since this human ability alone is not sufficient to realize all that is required of man, Allah sent Messengers and revealed the Scriptures. The example of Sharia is like the Sun and the human mind is like the eyes, and so when they are open, they see clearly the Sun and realize the details of things. Al-Qurtubi: 13/126.
Question: Explain the reason that Allah prefers the children of Adam over much of what He created.
A thread is a strand which is found in the middle of a date seed. This means that their deeds will not be lessened by as much as thread let alone more than that. Ibn Juzay: 1/493.
Question: Why is the word (thread) used In this verse?
(This) refers to the life of this world; (blind) is the blindness of the heart. This means that whoever is blind from the truth in this life, will be blind on the Day of Resurrection, that is bewildered and despairing. Ibn Juzay: 1/493.
Question: What is the meaning of blindness in this life and in the Hereafter?
Meaning: You [O Prophet] should understand that they only oppose you and show enmity to you because of the truth that you have brought, not because of your character. Al-Saadi: 464.
Question: What is the reason for the Polytheists' enmity toward the Prophet (ﷺ)? How does a preacher to Islam benefit from that?
These verses point to the individual's great need for Allah to make him steadfast, that he should keep beseeching his Lord, asking Him to make him firm in his faith, and he should continue striving by all means to attain that, because Allah said to the Prophet (ﷺ) who is the most perfect of all people: (Had We not made you stand firm, you would nearly have inclined to them a little), so how about others who are below him? Al-Saadi: 464.
Question: These verses indicate the individual's great need for Allah to make him steadfast. Explain.
The higher a person's status is and the more blessings he receives from Allah, the greater his sin and the more serious the offence will be if he does something blameworthy, because Allah reminded His Messenger (ﷺ) that if he did that - although he is far above doing such a thing- then: (We would have made you taste double punishment, both in this life and after death. Thereupon, you would have found no helper against Us). Al-Saadi: 464
Question: An offence committed by the Prophet (ﷺ), a scholar or a preacher is considered more serious than when it is committed by others. Why?
