Yusuf Verses 32 - 33

(But he abstained), he sought abstinence from what she wanted from him. (I might incline toward them), I might desire them. His speech here was in humility to Allah. Ibn Juzay: 1/415.
Question: When one is subjected to a trial, what should he do?

Yusuf Verses 0 - 33

Joseph (u) chose prison over sin. This is what a person should do if he is tested with the choice of two things - either committing a sin or undergoing a worldly punishment; he should choose the worldly punishment over committing the sin which incurs a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter. Hence one of the signs of faith is that a person hates to go back to disbelief after Allah has saved him from it, as he would hate to be thrown into the fire. Al-Saadi: 409.
Question: If one has a choice of either committing a sin or undergoing a worldly punishment. Which one should he choose?

Yusuf Verses 0 - 33

The words of Joseph (u) have two lessons, one of which is choosing prison and adversity over sins and disobedience. The second is invoking Allah to keep firm his heart on His religion, and direct it towards His obedience. If the heart is not firm, then it would incline towards those who enjoin committing sins, and become of the ignorant. So, within this invocation, there is a reliance upon Allah and seeking His help to keep firm the heart on faith and obedience; moreover, there is a display of patience in facing adversity, trial and harm as long as he maintains faith and obedience. Ibn Taimyah: 4/39.
Question: There are great lessons in this verse, draw some of them.

Yusuf Verses 0 - 35

Overall, the circumstances that Joseph (u) went through were tenderness in violence, a blessing in disguise, a relief that came with hardship, a hope within despair, redemption after it was too late for deliverance. The predestined events rushed in violently, at times, and gently at others; but the vanquish and violence came with a great reward and less liability. Al-Biqai: 4/37.
Question: How should the believer view the painful events destined by Allah?

Yusuf Verses 0 - 36

He would visit a sick fellow prisoner and care for him. In gathering, he would make room for those who share the prison with him, and help them out when they needed something. Moreover, he strived in worship and prayed all night. Al-Baghawi: 2/461.
Question: Joseph (u) did good for others extensively that they came and ask him. What were some of the good things he did?

Yusuf Verses 0 - 37

A sign of his good perception, when he saw that they were open to his call - as they thought positively of him and said to him, (We see you as one of those who do good), and they came to him so that he could interpret their dreams for them. He saw that they were eager to learn their interpretation from him - he saw that as an opportunity and made the most of it. So, he called them to Allah before interpreting their dreams. Al-Saadi: 410.
Question: For one who calls others to Allah, he should have good judgement as to the best times to call others to Allah. Explain in light of this verse.

Yusuf Verses 0 - 37

Just as the person should be submissive to Allah at times of ease, he should also be submissive to Him at times of hardship. Joseph (u) kept calling people to Allah, and when he was put in prison he continued to do so. He called the two young men to affirm the Oneness of Allah, and he told them to give up ascribing partners to Him. Al-Saadi: 410.
Question: Is submission to Allah limited to the times of ease only?
