(Their punishment will be multiplied), it will be intensified and increased because they went astray themselves and led others astray. Al-Saadi: 379.
Question: Why will their punishment be multiplied?
Allah explains that they are the biggest losers among mankind in their transaction for the abode of the Hereafter. That is because they exchanged the highest levels of Paradise for the lowest depths of Hellfire, and they substituted the pleasure of Gardens of Paradise for the fierce boiling water of Hellfire. They exchanged the drink of sealed nectar with the fierce hot wind, scalding water, and a shade of black smoke. They chose food from the filth of dirty wounds instead of wide-eyed lovely maidens. They preferred the abyss in Hellfire instead of lofty castles. They chose the wrath of Allah and His punishment over nearness to Him and the blessing of gazing at Him. Ibn Kathir: 2/423.
Question: Allah describes them as the worst losers, Why?
(And humble themselves before their Lord), humbleness is humility due to fear in the heart. In Arabic, the word used for humbleness refers to a land with a flat surface. Humbleness is humility with serenity , or constant turning to Allah in repentance. Al-Qurtubi: 11/96.
Question: How does the servant become among those who humble themselves before Allah?
Our scholars said: The chiefs were more resistant to the Message because of their overwhelming love for headship, the difficulty of being detached from it and their pride which keeps them from following others. A poor individual has none of these obstacles, and so he responds to the Message and follows the Messenger. This is the typical way of most people in this worldly life. Al-Qurtubi: 11/99.
Question: Truth is more likely to be accepted by the poor, and rejected by the eminent rich. Why?
This proved their ignorance since they criticized the Prophet (ﷺ) for being human, which is not really a flaw, because All Prophets (p) were sent with signs and proofs, and did not have to change the forms or images [of themselves or their followers]. They were sent to all people, and if a poor person accepts the Message, this would not affect them in a negative way since they have to accommodate all of their followers. Al-Qurtubi: 11/99.
Question: For one who calls others to Allah, is having poor and destitute followers considered a shortcoming in his message?
(The lowest among us), they described Noah's followers as (lowest) due to their poverty, thinking that honor is gained only through wealth, but that is far from the truth. In fact, despite their poverty, Noah's followers were more honorable than these chiefs. (Unwittingly), without thinking, which means that the lowest among us followed you without foresight or certainty. Ibn Juzay: 1/394.
Question: This verse sheds light on the traits of disbelievers when they accuse the believers. Explain.
This is an allusion that if they had reflected objectively without hatred and enmity, they would have known that his Message was true. Ibn Ashur: 12/51.
Question: Stubbornness and hatred influence the attitude of polytheists. Explain.
