Allah challenges them to produce the like of the Quran, saying, (Then let them produce a discourse like this) [52:34], and challenges them to produce (ten Suras like it) [11:13], but they could not do either. Then He challenges them to produce (one Surah like it) [10:38], and again they could not, and neither could anyone else among all created beings. Ibn Taimyah: 3/509.
Question: Explain the stages of the challenge presented to the disbelievers to produce the like of the Quran.
Then Allah, the Exalted, explains the miracle of the Quran, and that no one is able to produce the like of it, or even bring ten Surahs, or (a Surah like it) [2:23]. That is because the Speech of the Lord is not like the speech of the created beings, just as His attributes are not like the attributes of the creation. Ibn Kathir: 2/420.
Question: No one is able to produce the like of this Quran, why?
This also indicates that what we need to seek certain knowledge about, and not rely on mere conjecture, is the Quran and Tawhīd (Oneness of Allah), because Allah says: (Then know that it [the Quran] was revealed with the knowledge of Allah, and that there is no deity except Him). Al-Saadi: 378.
Question: What does the expression (Then know) indicate?
Meaning: All their aspirations are limited to this worldly life and its adornments, such as women and sons, heaped-up hordes of gold and silver, fine horses, livestock and well-tilled land. Thus, they focus their ambitions, efforts and striving on these things, and they do not aspire to the Hereafter at all. Such a person can be nothing but a disbeliever because if he were a believer, his faith would have prevented him from focusing all his attention on this world. Al-Saadi: 379.
Question: How can you infer that this verse pertains to the polytheists?
It is said that the meaning of this verse pertains to those who are ostentatious. It is narrated that on the Day of Resurrection, it will be said to them: "You have fasted, prayed, gave for charity, participated in Jihad, and recited the Quran so that people would say so about you, and they did." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Those are the first people by whom the fire will be enflamed." This Hadith was narrated by Abu Huraira (t) who wept intensely...[Sahih Muslim]. Al-Qurtubi: 11/84.
Question: What will happen on the Day of Resurrection to those who show off their good deeds?
Meaning: Is one who relies on a clear proof from his Lord like one who seeks this worldly life and its adornment? Or, is one who relies on a clear proof from his Lord like one who is immersed in misguidance and ignorance. Al-Baghawi: 2/392.
Question: One who is attached to this worldly life, and another whom Allah guided to the truth, Are they the same?
(Those who avert) themselves and others from faith and obedience. (Seeking to make it crooked), they move people away from the right path to sins and shirk. Al-Qurtubi: 11/92.
Question: What are the traits of those who are cursed by Allah in this verse?
