The change they were asking for was to replace a verse of a threat with another of a promise, and replace a verse of a promise with another of a threat. Moreover, they asked, to change the unlawful to lawful, and the lawful to unlawful; hence, Allah commands His Prophet (ﷺ) to inform them that it is not for him to do that, rather, it is up to the One Whose judgment cannot be overturned, nor His decree be contested. The Prophet (ﷺ) is no more than a conveying Messenger and an obedient follower. Al-Tabari: 15/40.
Question: Explain the risk in changing the rules of Sharia in accordance with whims and self-interests.
If they claim that their aim is for the truth to become evident by means of the signs that they demanded, then they are lying, for Allah has already shown them signs on the basis of which people have believed. Moreover, He is the One Who sends signs as He wills in accordance with His divine wisdom and mercy toward His servants. Al-Saadi: 360.
Question: The dialogue does not benefit anyone unless it is truthful. Explain in light of this verse.
(Those who do not expect to meet Us say) this indicates that what prompted them to be so stubborn was their lack of belief in meeting Allah or expecting to meet Him. The one who expects to meet Allah will inevitably submit to this Book and believe in it, for his intention is good. Al-Saadi: 360.
Question: What is the reason for the obstinacy of hypocrites and disbelievers toward Islamic issues?
(For I had remained among you a lifetime before it), I spent my whole life among you, and you know me well; you know that I am unlettered and can neither read nor write, and I have not studied or learned from anyone, but I have brought you this great Book that the most eloquent and knowledgeable of people are unable to match. As that is the case, how could I have produced it of my own accord? Is this not a definitive proof that it is a revelation from the Most Wise, Worthy of all praise? If you think on the basis of reason and understanding, and you reflect on my situation and that of this Book, you will reach a level of certainty far beyond any doubt that it is the truth beyond which is nothing but misguidance. However, if you insist on stubbornly disbelieving, then undoubtedly you are wrongdoers. Al-Saadi: 360.
Question: The Prophet (ﷺ) told his people that he spent a lifetime with them before. Why?
They admitted that their gods did not join Allah in creating heavens and earth, nor anything else, rather they were considering them as intercessors and mediators, as Allah says, (And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with Allah"). Ibn Taimyah: 3/473.
Question: In light of this verse, how do you respond to a grave worshiper who says: I only seek their intercession?
Meaning: Say, you asked me for the unseen, which belongs only to Allah. No one knows why He did not do that, but He only knows. Al-Baghawi: 2/356
Question: Some TV channel broadcasters claim that they know the unseen and can find the lost. What should the belief of the believer toward these claims?
If they were seeking the guidance and firm knowledge by asking for signs, Allah would have known that and would have granted them what they requested. But Allah knew that it was their obstinacy that was behind their request; therefore, He left them to suffer in their suspicion and doubt. Ibn Kathir: 2/394.
Question: Allah did not grant the polytheists the signs to prove that Muhammad (ﷺ) speaks the truth. Why?
