Disputing is prohibited, and the causes to avoid disputing are achieved through understanding, consulting and conferring with each other until unanimity is reached. If they dispute over something, then they should refer it to those in authority among them. Allah says, (If they referred it to the Messenger or to those in authority among them) [4:83], and (If you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger) [4:59]. Forbidding dispute is more general than enjoining obedience to those in authority because if they are prohibited from disputing among themselves, then disputing with those in authority is even more prohibited. Question: List some causes to avoid disputing.

Disputing leads to losing courage because it stirs anger, eliminates cooperation among people, and makes some await for others' turns of misfortune. This, in turn, leads them to guard against each other, and not to expect each other's support during the hardships of fighting. Therefore, Muslim community becomes turned away from engaging in an endeavor that is beneficial to all, and the army is drawn away from marching toward the enemy, thus becomes defeated by it. Question: List three harmful consequences of disputing.

Meaning: Your aim should be to seek Allah's pleasure and to make the religion of Allah supreme, to bar people from following the paths that lead to incurring the wrath and punishment of Allah and to attract people to the straight path of Allah that leads to paradise. Al-Saadi: 323.

In Arabic language, insolence is utilizing the blessings and strength which are bestowed by Allah to disobey Him. Al-Qurtubi: 10/42.
