Meaning: It is not because of your power and strength that you killed the pagans, who were many while you were few. Rather, it is Allah Who gave you victory over them. Ibn Kathir: 2/283.
Question: Who should really be accredited with killing and defeating the disbelievers?
(If you ask for a judgement, now has the judgement come unto you), this is in reference to Abu Jahl, (the leader of the polytheists army) on the day of battle of Badr, when the two armies faced each other, he said: "O Allah, whichever of the two parties severed ties of kinship, and brought us what we do not know, destroy him at once today." Al-Baghawi: 2/206.
Question: Allah is Forbearing with His servant until the servant brings about his own demise. Explain in light of this verse.
What is meant by Allah being with them is that He supports the believers to a degree commensurate with their level of faith and righteous deeds. If the enemy is given the upper hand over the believers on some occasions, that is only because of shortcomings on the believers' part and their failure to do the duties required by faith. Otherwise, if they do what Allah has enjoined in every respect, no army of theirs would ever be defeated as a final outcome, and their enemy would never have the upper hand over them in such a way that they can never recover from it. Al-Saadi: 317-318.
Question: How do we reconcile Allah's care of the believers and the occasional prevail of disbelievers over them?
The hearing which Allah says they do not have is hearing in the sense of what has a positive impact on the heart. As for hearing in the sense of what establishes proof against them, Allah has established proof against them by means of what they heard of His revelations, but He did not cause them to hear in any beneficial way, because He does not see any good in them that would qualify them to listen and benefit from His revelations. Al-Saadi: 318.
Question: What is the hearing that Allah says the polytheists do not have? What do you learn from that?
This verse indicates that not everyone who hears and understands has good in him. Rather, he may understand but does not practice, and so he becomes useless without any good in him. Also, this verse indicates that making someone hear in order to comprehend is sought for one who has good in him, as he would benefit from it. Ibn Taimyah: 3/265.
Question: Does everyone who hears and understands have good in him?
The heart is brought to life by becoming submissive to Allah, the Almighty, consistently obeying Him and His Messenger (ﷺ). Al-Saadi: 318.
Question: How can the heart be brought to life?
Allah comes in between a person and his heart, so he will neither believe nor disbelieve except by Allah's leave. Anas bin Malik () said: "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say these words often, (O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion). We said: "O Allah's Messenger! We believed in you and in what you brought us; are you afraid for us?" He said: (Yes, for the hearts are between two of Allah's Fingers, He changes them (as He wills)." Ibn Kathir: 2/285.
Question: Knowing that your heart is in the Hand of Allah, not yours, then what must you do?
